Evangelion Returns to Theaters Next Month (But There’s a Catch)

Neon Genesis Evangelion, widely regarded as one of the most impactful anime productions, is set to make a comeback in cinemas, rekindling the passion of fans who have followed it since its initial premiere in 1995. This year marks the series’ impressive 30th anniversary, and to celebrate this significant milestone, all films from the extensive sci-fi saga will be shown in theaters over a series of months. Originally, viewers were introduced to characters like Denji, Asuka, Rei, Misato, and found themselves lost within an intricate sci-fi narrative. Despite the passage of three decades, fans continue to ponder the deeper meanings behind Neon Genesis Evangelion, often revisiting episodes, recaps, and sequels in search of answers that may not even exist. Now, enthusiasts have an opportunity to immerse themselves once more in the Evangelion universe on the grandest screen available; however, there’s a condition: only select theaters will be showing these iconic anime films.

The “30th Anniversary Monthly Eva EVANGELION Movie Festival 2025-2026” is a series of events happening from October 2025 to February 2026, where selected Evangelion movies will be shown in cinemas. However, it’s worth noting that these screenings are currently limited to Japan. The festival includes showings of every movie within the franchise, from “Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth – ‘DEATH(TRUE)²&REBIRTH’” in October to “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time – version 3.0+1.01” in February 2026. Each movie will be screened for one week in select theaters. A new trailer for this festival has been released on the official khara YouTube channel.

Evangelion Remains as Mysterious and Endearing 30 Years Later

Mentioned earlier, the Evangelion series stands out among other prominent anime science fiction stories such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Over the past three decades following its debut, this franchise, deeply rooted in Christian symbolism and philosophy, has significantly impacted numerous storytellers due to its narrative about Angels aiming to wipe out humanity, and humans responding with the development of the EVA project to counteract them.

Besides the captivating animations produced by Gainax and the haunting narrative which leaves many questions unanswered, the show’s enigmatic nature has prompted its fanbase to delve deeply in search of hidden meanings. Despite Hideaki Anno himself acknowledging that the series isn’t overly complex, the elusive mystery surrounding Evangelion has left a lasting impact on anime fandom that is seldom equaled by other productions.
