Reports surfaced earlier this month that Hugh Jackman will be playing the famous pirate Long John Silver in Scott’s adaptation of Treasure Island. Jackman recently confirmed the news in an interview with DiscussingFilm, where he was promoting his new film, The Death of Robin Hood. After playing Robin Hood himself, he was asked if he enjoys portraying well-known characters from literature. Jackman explained that he was actually drawn to the project by the strength of the script and the opportunity to collaborate with Scott.
Hugh Jackman Is the New Long John Silver
I read the script, and my initial reaction was positive,” Jackman explained. “I wasn’t familiar with Treasure Island at all – I’d never read the book or seen any adaptations. I knew the character Long John Silver by name, but that was it. Apparently, this is a fresh take on the story, and when Ridley Scott sent it to me, I immediately wanted to be involved.
He praised Jack Thorne’s fantastic script and expressed hope that the project would move forward. He confirmed his commitment, saying he was eager to see if anyone would actually produce it.
The new adaptation of Treasure Island, written by Thorne (Adolescence), is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. Scott directs and produces alongside Michael Pruss, with Thorne serving as executive producer. While Hugh Jackman hinted at the project, it hasn’t been officially greenlit and is currently being presented to various studios. However, given current momentum, the film is likely to move ahead.
Treasure Island Gets Reimagined Once Again
This classic adventure novel, first published in 1881, is considered incredibly impactful. It tells the story of Jim Hawkins, a boy who finds a treasure map belonging to the famous pirate Captain Flint. This discovery sends Jim on a sea journey to find the buried riches, but he soon realizes many of his shipmates are pirates themselves, led by the cunning cook, Long John Silver. Silver became one of literature’s most memorable villains and greatly influenced how we picture pirates today.
Throughout its history, Treasure Island has been retold many times in movies and on television. Famous actors who have portrayed Long John Silver include Wallace Beery, Robert Newton, and Tim Curry. The popular series Black Sails offered a unique take, acting as a backstory to the original story and featuring Luke Arnold as the memorable pirate.
Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island does not yet have a release date.
