Everyone on the yacht crew seems to think they know best, but Cooper just wants to enjoy the scenery, chat with his grandmother, and maybe share a few harmless flirty moments with a quirky new crewmate named Kat. I initially worried Cooper was cast just for entertainment value – the show often brings on inexperienced yachties for drama. However, after the first charter, it seems Cooper won’t be causing any trouble this season. The problems will likely come from the more experienced crew members who have negative attitudes.
This week’s episode starts with Nathan still discussing his reservations about promoting Joe to lead deckhand with Gael. He doesn’t fully trust Joe, but doesn’t explain why until Sandy challenges his decision to promote Luke instead. Nathan then reveals he fears Joe will cause problems with the female crew members and challenge his authority. While these concerns are valid, he didn’t mention them earlier when speaking with the captain. Sandy points out she disagrees with his choice and suggests waiting until after the next charter to make a decision. She rightly questions why Nathan would trust Luke, whom he’s known for only two days, more than Joe, who he’s worked alongside for over two years, urging him not to let personal feelings affect his leadership.
Honestly, I’m starting to feel like Nathan, because Gen is totally convinced Kayley is trying to steal her second stew position. It’s a bit much, considering it doesn’t even affect Gen directly! Kayley can be assertive without being rude, but poor Gen just can’t seem to keep her frustration in check. When she finally got a chance to say something, it was about the place mats – seriously, the place mats – and she just snapped. Her voice was shaking when she told Kayley, ‘No more shoving the place mats, anywhere. I’ve noticed it a few times now.’ It was so awkward!
Cooper experienced his first anchor watch, and Nathan explained what to look out for. While on duty, Cooper practiced tying knots. The wind increased – Nathan had instructed him to wake the captain if it exceeded 12 knots – and Cooper hesitated about whether to disturb Sandy. It briefly reached 14 knots but then dropped back down to 10. Ultimately deciding caution was best, Cooper woke Sandy, who appreciated his attentiveness. At 4 a.m., Joe relieved Cooper, hoping to impress Sandy with his diligence. However, Nathan was actually annoyed; Joe waking up early just meant Nathan would have to get up sooner too, and Nathan definitely didn’t need Joe trying to prove himself by working harder.
The guests started their day with fresh, homemade bagels and delicious pastries before taking a trip to Lokrum Island for sushi and cliff jumping. Nathan tasked Luke with handling preparations, testing whether he’s ready to take on more leadership responsibility. Nathan jokingly admitted in a private interview that he wants concrete evidence to support his gut feelings about Luke. The island excursion was a success—much to Gen’s annoyance, Kayley beautifully set up the dining area. Gen felt slighted when Kayley went to the beach instead of helping with service, not realizing Kayley had only been responsible for setup and Aesha handled the serving. To make matters worse, Kayley shared her cake decorating hobby with Joy, who then asked for help with tonight’s anniversary cake. This reinforced Gen’s feeling that Kayley is always needed while she’s stuck doing chores in the cabins.
Gen complains to Kat about being unhappy with Kayley and wonders if she should try harder to get rid of her – though she phrases it as needing to be more assertive. Surprisingly, Kat advises Gen to actually tone down that approach, telling her to stay positive. Kat’s right; their conflict is mostly a matter of how they each choose to act, and this puts Gen at a disadvantage because Kayley always seems cheerful and upbeat. What’s even more frustrating is that while Gen freely expresses her annoyance with Kayley, Kayley simply brushes off the tension, only saying that Gen has strong preferences. Seeing things from Kayley’s perspective actually makes me feel sorry for Gen – the more upset she gets, the better Kayley appears to be handling everything.
As their outing nears its end, Nathan continues to evaluate Luke’s ability to be a lead deckhand by having him operate the small boat, or ‘tender,’ used to collect Coop from the beach – they enjoy the scenery and have a pleasant time. Luke handles the boat well at first, but struggles when it’s time to dock, leading Nathan to reluctantly admit that Sandy was correct – a lead deckhand needs to be able to drive the tender. Later, Coop tells Nathan that Joe mentioned their difficult past. Nathan is frustrated that Joe is discussing him with the crew, but he recognizes Joe is the only practical choice for the lead position.
Luke doesn’t seem very interested in a promotion; he’s much more concerned with staying in shape, hitting the gym early each morning. He always comes to the kitchen right before dinner, complaining that he’s incredibly hungry. Joy tries to help him out with an extra steak, but she realizes she made a mistake with a guest’s order – she thought Emilie wanted lobster, but she actually requested steak. Luckily, there was more steak available, but it was a good reminder that work needs to be the priority. Joy’s cooking looked fantastic, and it made me wonder how I’d react if I were on a free yacht trip and served a personal pot of creamy mashed potatoes. I think I’d be overjoyed!
Gen keeps complaining about her cleaning tasks, even though they’re part of her job description. Her negativity is so strong that Kayley tells Aesha she’s willing to take on extra work if it means Gen will be happier. Aesha firmly responds that Gen’s feelings aren’t the deciding factor. Aesha is worried that Gen is starting the job with this kind of attitude. The next morning, Aesha asks Kayley how the overnight shift went. Kayley and Gen had a minor disagreement, but Kayley assures Aesha she can manage the situation, for now. Kayley is proving herself to be a strong team member. Genevieve needs to step it up!
Nathan is still shaken up after a bad practice run, so he’s anxious about docking the boat again. This attempt is slightly improved, but not good enough to satisfy Joe, who starts to doubt Nathan’s ability to lead as bosun. He interrupts while Nathan and Sandy try to navigate in windy conditions, leading them to bump into another vessel. Despite the rocky docking, the charter guests are pleased and leave a $25,000 tip – nearly $1,900 per crew member! During the tip distribution, Sandy compliments Joy and the interior team on a successful first charter, and tells the deck crew they’ll eventually get the hang of docking, though it may take time.
After everything that happened, Nathan was relieved when Gael and Kayden – dressed in his Akira One uniform – came to visit the boat. Sandy and Aesha were overjoyed to see them, calling their relationship a wonderful surprise, especially since most boatmances don’t work out. Everyone was excited to meet the baby, though Joe seemed a little scared – perhaps of the baby, or maybe of Gael, whom he hadn’t seen or spoken to since they last worked together.
Let’s talk about the budding romances on the boat! Kat and Cooper have a sweet, playful connection, almost like something from a Disney Channel show. Luke, however, is juggling attention between Joy and Gen, and he strategically sat between them at dinner, which doesn’t bode well. Gen confided in Kat that she doesn’t think Luke is seriously interested right now, unaware that Joy is also vying for his attention. Meanwhile, Joe seems to be flirting with Kayley, but he’s acting a bit differently than usual tonight.
Joe recently received upsetting news: his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. He’s very close to her and is understandably upset. While he wants to rush home to be with her, she asked him to stay and complete his current commitment, as her cancer was caught early and she feels optimistic about her recovery. Nathan showed Joe a lot of support, offering hugs, words of love, and assuring him it’s okay to take the time he needs. Sandy connected Joe with Dr. Pam Wright, a breast cancer surgeon who shared that early-stage diagnoses generally have positive outcomes. Sandy also revealed she’s a ten-year survivor of kidney cancer herself. Everyone is doing their best to support Joe through this difficult time. It must be incredibly hard dealing with such news while being in the public eye, but he’s handling it with grace, and it’s a good reminder that everyone has compassion.
The peaceful atmosphere doesn’t last long. At dinner, Nathan gets upset with Joe after hearing Joe tell Kat they don’t have a good relationship with Gael. Nathan overreacts, as if Joe had said something truly awful. Joe tries to explain he didn’t say anything negative, but Nathan isn’t willing to listen, especially after having a few tequila shots. Nathan needs to get himself together if he wants to be a better, more self-assured leader this season, and maybe avoiding unnecessary arguments with his crew would be a good first step.
