Fans are eagerly awaiting Marvel’s Wolverine, a highly anticipated single-player game scheduled to launch soon. Recent details about the game suggest it could serve as a model for future storylines within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game appears grittier and more grown-up than their Spider-Man games, all while building on the established universe (Earth-1408) by introducing mutants such as Wolverine and Jean Grey. But a recent reveal focuses less on Wolverine himself and more on what’s happening with the X-Men in this world.
As a huge MCU fan, I’m really excited about the potential for mutants to finally join the main universe after Avengers: Secret Wars. And honestly, Marvel’s Wolverine seems like it could be exactly how Marvel introduces the X-Men without messing up all the established storylines. It feels like a smart way to bring them in!
In Insomniac’s Marvel Universe, The X-Men Don’t Exist (Yet)
A recent reveal about the new Marvel’s Wolverine game is that the X-Men aren’t currently part of the same universe as Insomniac’s other Marvel games. This doesn’t mean they won’t appear in future installments, but they haven’t been included in this particular world… yet.
The game will primarily follow Wolverine’s story, but will also feature Team X, a group of mutant mercenaries he works with. This organization seems dedicated to protecting other mutants, as the existence of mutants is still a closely guarded secret from the world.
It’s quite surprising to learn that the current state of affairs connects Marvel’s Wolverine to the world of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games – a universe where heroes like The Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther already exist, alongside teams like The Defenders. Despite this expansive hero roster, it appears the X-Men aren’t currently part of that universe, nor is Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. However, there’s still a possibility the X-Men could form at some point in the future.
It might seem odd, but a Marvel Universe with heroes excluding the X-Men actually resembles the Marvel Cinematic Universe quite a bit.
Marvel’s Wolverine Offers A Pretty Fascinating Blueprint For The MCU
Now that Marvel Studios plans to add more mutants to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Secret Wars, fans are wondering where they’ve been during the previous storylines involving the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga. Explaining the X-Men’s absence throughout all those past events would be tricky. A simple solution might be to follow a similar approach as Marvel’s Wolverine, where the X-Men haven’t officially come together as a team yet.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe might show the X-Men and Professor Xavier’s school being founded now, as more mutants start appearing. We could see Xavier finding and training his first students, essentially building the X-Men team from scratch. However, some mutants, like Wolverine or Jean Grey (as hinted at in the upcoming video game), may have already been operating independently before the X-Men officially formed.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz that they’re really setting things up for the X-Men’s arrival in the MCU. The latest rumor? Sadie Sink might be playing Jean Grey in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day! It would totally fit with what Marvel’s been doing – introducing mutant characters bit by bit. We’ve already seen hints with Ms. Marvel being a mutant instead of an Inhuman, and characters like Namor and Mr. Immortal from She-Hulk – it feels like they’re building towards a full-blown X-Men project, and this could be another piece of the puzzle.
Even though we’re learning more about the story of Marvel’s Wolverine, it seems like we don’t need to see the whole X-Men team right away to enjoy stories about mutants. In fact, holding off on bringing the team together could make their first appearance even more impactful.
Marvel’s Wolverine releases September 15th from Insomniac Games.
