The film franchise wrapped up in 2012 with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. More than ten years later, people who enjoyed the movies-which were based on Stephanie Meyer’s popular books-are still debating one of the most unbelievable moments in the last film.
Breaking Dawn Part 2, and Breaking Dawn Part 1 (released in 2011), were both directed by Bill Condon. Condon is an Oscar-winning director known for films such as Gods and Monsters, Chicago, and Dreamgirls. Now, thirteen years after the initial film came out, Condon is discussing a specific scene in an interview – the moment when Peter Facinelli’s character, Carlisle Cullen, appears to die.
Condon stood up for both Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Part 2, especially a scene in Part 2 that didn’t appear in the original books. At the end of Breaking Dawn Part 2, the movie makes viewers think Carlisle Cullen has died, which goes against what was established in Stephenie Meyer’s novels. But it’s eventually revealed that Carlisle’s death was just a vision experienced by Alice (Ashley Greene), his adopted daughter.
The scene, along with others, sparked some negative reactions from the Twilight fan community, and those feelings still exist today. Condon, discussing the creative choices he made in the final two films, explained, “It was a great chance to try new things, especially knowing there was a very devoted fanbase eagerly anticipating the films. We were aware we were going to do something quite harsh – eliminate many of the characters they loved.”
“That felt like a must-do, because I really wanted to witness the premiere. I’ve honestly never heard a scream so intense and prolonged as the one we got when we filmed Carlisle’s decapitation,” Condon explained.
The Twilight Saga is Returning to Theaters – and It’s Soon
Ultimately, the last two Twilight movies did very well in theaters. Breaking Dawn Part 1 made $712.2 million with a production cost of $110 million, and Breaking Dawn Part 2 earned an even greater $848.5 million from a $120 million budget. However, critics didn’t think much of them. Breaking Dawn Part 1 received a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Breaking Dawn Part 2 scored a 49% from critics. Fans generally liked the movies more, giving the 2011 film a 60% audience score and the 2012 sequel a 70%. Overall, the entire Twilight film series was a huge success, bringing in over $3.3 billion from its five movies.
As a huge fan of the entire Twilight Saga, I’m so excited to hear that all five movies are coming back to theaters! It’s all happening to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book. The first movie, Twilight, is returning to US cinemas on Oct. 29, and it’s going to kick off five days of special second premieres for each film. The Twilight Saga: New Moon will be next on Oct. 30, followed by Eclipse on Oct. 31. Then, Breaking Dawn Part 1 hits theaters on Nov. 1, and finally, Breaking Dawn Part 2 on Nov. 2. I can’t wait!
Alongside bringing all five films back to cinemas, The Twilight Saga’s publisher, Little Brown Books for Young Readers, is releasing three special editions of Twilight to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary. These new books will include a standard paperback edition marking the 20th anniversary, a premium hardcover edition, and a deluxe hardcover collection of the complete saga.
The Twilight Saga is streaming on Disney+.
