Love Island USA Recap: Bryce and Zach Continue to Recreate Challengers Scenes

If you were hoping to find out how America voted last night, you’re probably frustrated! We have to wait until tonight to see who couples up with whom. I’m really eager to know who Jen will choose – though it feels like we haven’t gotten enough time to truly get to know her and see her connection with Gabriel or Zach. Right now, she mostly just listens to Sol’s problems. It’s almost as if the show is intentionally building up anticipation and frustration for both the viewers and the contestants.

I surprisingly enjoyed how chaotic episode eight was. Delaying the recoupling by a day wasn’t a big deal considering everything else happening. I also thought Iain Stirling’s jokes about the Love Island app crashing were funny – he was on top form all night, particularly when he called out Sincere’s awkward Three Little Pigs analogy. Honestly, that analogy was his worst yet, even though Bryce tried to help. The season’s storyline is picking up pace, so I don’t think it’s fair to call this episode pointless.

A love hexagon forms

Last night’s episode featured the typical misunderstandings between Melanie and Sincere, plus a dramatic collision of two love triangles: Melanie, Sincere, and Sol, and Kenzie, Corbin, and Caleb. Kenzie begins the episode happily sharing her new professional life, but things quickly change when Melanie asks Corbin to talk, and he immediately tries to kiss her. It’s becoming clear that some of the men on this season only know how to connect with someone physically.

Melanie deserves credit for stepping back from a potential meltdown. She and Kenzie manage to have an honest conversation before things get too heated, and Melanie actually handles herself well in episode eight. However, Sincere’s dishonesty about his growing connection with Sol is really frustrating – it’s hard to watch Melanie get excited when it’s clear he isn’t serious about her. He keeps saying Love Island justifies exploring multiple connections, but he should at least be upfront about it! It feels manipulative, and it’s only making Melanie more upset. Perhaps she’ll have a similar storyline to Kaylor from past seasons, rather than ending up like Huda.

Bryce and Zach continue to re-create Challengers scenes

I’ve been on the fence about Bryce and Trinity as a couple. They seem sweet now, although at first they reminded me of Austin and Chelley from season seven. I just haven’t seen enough of them to be totally convinced they’re a good fit. But tonight, I finally started believing that Trinity has real feelings for Bryce, which makes it really disappointing to see him distance himself from her.

Throughout all of this drama, Bryce is constantly influenced by his friend Zach, who acts as a sort of negative voice in his ear. Zach consistently points out that Bryce and Trinity aren’t compatible and suggests she isn’t even interested in him. He arguably plays a role in pushing Bryce to pursue Kayda instead. Their conversation about Kayda is amusing, particularly how often Zach laughs and encourages Bryce, despite knowing Bryce has little chance – Trinity clearly chose Zach previously, and nothing has changed. It’s hard for Bryce to move past being rejected like that.

I’m dreading the moment Bryce tries to talk to Kayda. It could be incredibly awkward, especially after witnessing his uncomfortable conversation with Trinity in the last episode. Still, a little embarrassment might be what he deserves.

Miscellaneous drama

The drama wasn’t limited to just Gabe and those two girls. It’s good that Gabe told Beatriz he kissed Jen and Sol, but kissing both of them is still a lot! It seems like everyone’s forgetting that kissing someone when it’s part of a challenge is different than just randomly making out. While Love Island is about finding love, Gabe doesn’t seem genuinely interested in a real connection. Beatriz also talks to Corbin, trying to figure out if he has any depth, but unfortunately, he doesn’t. He says they have a connection, then immediately starts talking about Melanie. And wanting a big family isn’t the same as having a personality.

Aniya and KC seem to be doing well together again, which is encouraging. It’s positive that KC is openly talking about his feelings for her. However, I’m not convinced their relationship will last, since they’re mostly focused on having fun, and a relationship needs more than that. It makes me wonder what would have happened if Sol had been interested in KC instead of Sincere. For now, though, they’re the happy couple, and we should enjoy their time together while it lasts.
