How Big Was That Bed, Exactly?

Honestly, it feels like a lifetime ago that all the drama unfolded in the villa, but here at Vulture, we’re still obsessed with that giant bed! I mean, where did it even come from? Was it actually comfortable for everyone? And will they ever top it next season? These questions kept me up at night, so we tracked down Richard Jensen, the production designer for Love Island USA, and he finally gave us all the answers we were hoping for!

Jensen shared that the massive bed, affectionately known as BB, was surprisingly built from 16 queen-size mattresses! This created a 26-by-21-foot structure that everyone loved on Monday night. It was covered with a custom-made fitted sheet and a duvet made from 12 super-king duvet inserts sewn together. While it was huge, it wasn’t the biggest bed ever. That record belongs to a 107-by-64-foot bed built in Chile in 2024 by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency. The goal of ‘Biggest Bed’ was to highlight the lack of safe places to sleep for children and teens facing disasters, abuse, or poverty. The villa’s BB had a similar purpose: to draw attention to the challenges of modern, undefined relationships – the ‘situationship’.

How did the team manage to create that enormous bed? It turns out the contestants preferred their beds just like Kenzie likes her partners – large and made locally. Jensen explains they had everything custom-built in Fiji using local materials and businesses. A ten-person team assembled the bed and made it look perfect during the 90 minutes the contestants were preparing for their slow-motion pillow fight. Though the show likely won’t return to that location, the bed’s pieces are being reused for other projects. The bed’s brief time on the island made a big impression, teaching everyone a simple lesson: think big or don’t bother!
