James Gunn Confirms Peacemaker’s Finale Will Fix Season 2’s Biggest Issue

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, is making a significant adjustment to the Peacemaker Season 2 finale that fans will likely love. As the TV-MA-rated superhero comedy transitions from the DCEU to the DCU – nearly four years after its debut – critical reception remains exceptionally positive. Gunn, a seasoned superhero filmmaker, took a somewhat reduced directing role this season, helming three episodes instead of five, but still wrote all eight. However, this didn’t hinder Peacemaker Season 2, which currently boasts a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, exceeding the already impressive 93% score of Season 1.

Viewers are really enjoying the way the show explores the inner world of John Cena’s Christopher Smith, as well as its unique and dark version of the DC Universe, called Earth X. However, the season hasn’t been without its problems. Some people feel that Peacemaker Season 2 didn’t capture the magic of the first season, shifting away from a clear story of heroes and villains in favor of more character development and humor. Also, like many shows and movies today, this DCU series faced criticism each week because the episodes were quite short, averaging just over 30 minutes.

Peacemaker Season 2 initially had episodes lasting about 45 minutes, but some fans were unhappy when the length decreased to as little as 33 minutes for the episode before the finale. Luckily, James Gunn announced on Threads that Episode 8, titled “Full Nelson,” will be “over 57 minutes” long, making it the longest episode of Season 2.

As a big fan of Peacemaker, I’m really excited to hear that the season finale is going to be the longest episode yet! It’s going to be almost an hour long – about eight minutes longer than the previous longest episode, which was Season 2, Episode 1. That means the whole second season will clock in at around 334 minutes (that’s 5 hours and 34 minutes!), giving us an average runtime of just under 42 minutes per episode.

  • S2 E1: 45 minutes
  • S2 E2: 49 minutes
  • S2 E3: 38 minutes
  • S2 E4: 39 minutes
  • S2 E5: 37 minutes
  • S2 E6: 36 minutes
  • S2 E7: 33 minutes
  • S2 E8: 57 minutes (approx)

In comparison, Season 1 had a total runtime of 349 minutes (5 hours, 49 minutes). Each episode averaged just under 44 minutes in length:

  • S1 E1: 47 minutes
  • S1 E2: 41 minutes
  • S1 E3: 40 minutes
  • S1 E4: 47 minutes
  • S1 E5: 43 minutes
  • S1 E6: 47 minutes
  • S1 E7: 39 minutes
  • S1 E8: 45 minutes

Because “Full Nelson” is expected to be nearly an hour long, Gunn will have ample opportunity to both wrap up the story arc of Peacemaker Season 2 and deliver on his commitment to introduce Man of Tomorrow, his upcoming DCU film, which is scheduled to be released on July 9, 2027.

What Will Happen in Peacemaker Season 2’s Big Finale?

Please be advised – the remainder of this article reveals key plot points from Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 7, titled “Like a Keith in the Night.”

Although Peacemaker and the 11th Street Kids have left Earth-X, their troubles with that alternate, Nazi-controlled reality might not be over. Specifically, Keith Smith, also known as Captain Triumph, seems likely to heal from his wounds and could seek revenge, potentially creating problems for Peacemaker and the broader DC Universe.

Keith isn’t just after Peacemaker for revenge – for killing his brother and being involved in their father’s death. If he were to join the larger DCU, he’d likely be a powerful opponent to its more modern values, considering he comes from a world with Nazi ideologies.

As a big fan, I’m really hoping they address what’s going on with Peacemaker and Emilia Harcourt. Their will they, won’t they dynamic has been so compelling, especially after the last couple of episodes, and honestly, I could see things going either way. It’s a loose end I’m eager to see tied up, and I’m hoping for some resolution!

Additionally, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. now has a portal to other dimensions, and the trailer suggests he’ll be sending ARGUS agents to explore what’s on the other side. Harcourt mentioned they’re searching for “resources [and] new ground for overpopulation,” which could be significant for the future of the DCU. It’s possible these resources from other worlds aren’t entirely beneficial.

Flag Sr. really got me hyped, saying “We’re gonna find what we need in there, and everything we talked about is gonna come to fruition.” I think this is all connected to what the ARGUS boss is planning with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor – maybe we’ll see another cameo from him to set up Man of Tomorrow and the next major storyline. It’s exciting to think about where this is all going!

Beyond Man of Tomorrow, Gunn seems to be planning the next storyline for the 11th Street Kids. He suggested fans will “find out a little bit more” about their future in Episode 8, but that future might not continue in Peacemaker Season 3.

Notably, in the same discussion with Deadline, he mentioned “some of these characters will continue,” leading many to believe that we’ll have to say goodbye to at least a few members of the group, potentially through tragic losses:

You’ll learn more in Episode 8, as that’s not quite what’s happening. While some of these characters will carry on, it isn’t exactly [Peacemaker Season 3]. I’m not saying it *won’t* happen, but you’ll get more clues after watching Episode 8.
