According to reports, Yuji Naka, a key creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, originally proposed a much more unsuitable title for the game Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg when it was released in Western countries.
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is a 3D platforming game released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003. Created by Sonic Team and produced by Naka, the game features a boy wearing a rooster suit who uses giant eggs – rolling, growing, and hatching them – to battle enemies and discover vibrant worlds.
Though it never reached blockbuster status, the game has remained popular with GameCube enthusiasts due to its unique story, vibrant visuals, and incredibly memorable music.
Former Sega exec reveals rejected Billy Hatcher name
In a recent interview with Sega-16, Mike Fischer, a former vice president at Sega of America, shared stories about working with Naka on the game Billy Hatcher, revealing that they had a significant disagreement over the game’s title.
Fischer explains that Naka initially proposed the name “Giant Eggs” for the game, but Sega of America rejected it. They were concerned that the phrase “to lay a big egg” is an idiom in the US meaning to fail, and didn’t want that association.
Fischer explained that his team then proposed ‘Billy Hatcher’ as a title, focusing on the boy character instead of the egg. This ultimately became the game’s name, ‘Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg,’ although Fischer said Naka never really liked it.
The ex-Sega executive then said Naka proposed an even stranger name after noticing Billy was dressed as a rooster.
Fischer remembered the man saying, ‘I have another name for the boy in the rooster costume. Since ‘rooster’ is also known as ‘cock,’ could we call the game ‘Giant Cock’ in English?’
Fischer playfully suggested he should have accepted the offer just to see what would happen, but then strongly criticized Naka, calling him the most unpleasant person he’d ever collaborated with.
