The future of a well-known character on the show has been decided. Before Season 24 begins, executive producer Alec Sulkin has stated that Ernie the Giant Chicken is officially dead and won’t likely be appearing in any future episodes. It seems his time on the show is over.
The future of Ernie the Giant Chicken has been uncertain ever since the Season 23 episode, “The Chicken or the Meg,” where Meg started dating his son, Nugget. Even though Ernie and Peter have a history of fighting, the Giant Chicken was okay with Meg seeing his teenage son, but only if she stopped talking to her father. Sadly, Meg didn’t like that condition, and she ended up cutting off Ernie’s head. His body ran around the yard for a short time before falling over. Although Ernie has survived many dangerous fights with Peter, Sulkin told TVLine why he believes Meg’s attack will be the end for the character.
Family Guy Ran Out of Ideas for Ernie the Giant Chicken
“I believe the chicken’s time has come,” Sulkin told TVLine. “To be honest, we created so many memorable scenes with the giant chicken battling Peter that it was becoming difficult to outdo them. It puts a lot of pressure on our production team, and we might have already gotten everything we could from that character.” The Giant Chicken first appeared in a Family Guy episode called “Da Boom” in Season 2, which also marked Mila Kunis’ debut as the voice of Meg. The Giant Chicken continued to make appearances in almost every season afterward, though not every episode included an increasingly intense fight with Peter.
Ernie the Giant Chicken is now one of just a few repeating characters on Family Guy who have actually died. Before Ernie, the most recent major death was in Season 21, when Stewie’s rival Doug (voiced by Chris Parnell) died in a plane crash that happened off-screen. Other characters who have died on the show include Peter’s boss Angela, who was removed after her voice actress, Carrie Fisher, passed away, and news reporter Diane Simmons, famously shot by Stewie in
The show was renewed in April for four more seasons, extending the run of this popular animated sitcom to a total of 27 seasons. Family Guy is set in the made-up town of Quahog, Rhode Island, and follows the Griffin family – parents Peter (Seth MacFarlane) and Lois (Alex Borstein), their kids Meg (Kunis), Chris (Seth Green), and Stewie (MacFarlane), and their talking dog, Brian (MacFarlane) – as they experience various funny situations. The series is famous for its self-aware cutaway jokes, which often poke fun at American society.
Before its 24th season begins, the show has two special episodes planned – a Halloween special called “A Little Fright Music” on October 6th, and a Christmas episode with the date still to be announced.
