Nintendo Will Attend Gamescom 2026, Sparking Speculation For What They’ll Show Off

Summer Games Fest has largely taken over for E3 as a major summer gaming event, but Gamescom is just as important, and many would say even more so.

Geoff Keighley’s gaming showcase often includes unexpected game announcements. But Gamescom, taking place August 26th-30th in Cologne, Germany, will also have a lot of exciting news to share.

Nintendo has announced it will return to Gamescom in 2026! The company confirmed on social media that it will be in Cologne, Germany from August 26th to 30th and is excited to see attendees there.

Last year, the company showcased its games at the event following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. Highlights at their booth included Metroid Prime 4 and Hollow Knight: Silksong, as well as the highly anticipated Elden Ring, which wasn’t yet available on the console.

So with that in mind, what will they bring this year?

Nintendo’s 2026 Gamescom Lineup Could Come After Some Big Announcements

Right now, Nintendo doesn’t have many confirmed games planned for 2026, even with the unexpected reveal of a new Star Fox title.

Looking ahead to new video games, the only confirmed title right now is Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Star Fox, Splatoon Raiders, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will all be out before Gamescom. So, what exciting surprises might Nintendo reveal at their booth?

It would be quite ironic if Elden Ring became playable again, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a number of other games – especially smaller, independent titles – join it. We saw a similar mix last year, and I anticipate the same this year.

However, details are scarce because Nintendo hasn’t shared much information. We usually see a big Nintendo Direct presentation early in the year, but the last full one was in September 2025. This leaves us wondering: what big game series will be released on the new Nintendo Switch 2?

It’s unlikely we’ll see a new 3D Mario game so soon after Donkey Kong Bananza, and it hasn’t been long since Kirby Air Riders, making a new Super Smash Bros. seem improbable too. However, an Animal Crossing game feels like a good fit. Nintendo has been releasing a lot of relaxing, cozy games recently, like Tomodachi Life and Pokémon Pokopia, and we know Animal Crossing is planned for the Switch 2. The big question is whether we’ll see it revealed at Gamescom 2026, or if Nintendo has another surprise in store.
