Outlander May Be Over, But The Finale Leaves A Hint About The Next Big Spinoff

The series finale of Outlander has concluded, but one unresolved question hints at the possibility of a future spinoff. After beginning in 2014, the epic love story of Jamie and Claire has reached a satisfying, though emotional, end. The final episode, “And the World Was All Around Us,” intentionally leaves a few things open to interpretation.

The season finale of Outlander showed Jamie Fraser seemingly facing death at the Battle of King’s Mountain, as hinted earlier in the season. However, things weren’t as straightforward as they appeared. Claire’s powerful healing skills kicked in at the last moment, and both she and Jamie were shown breathing and alive as the episode ended. The credits rolled immediately after, leaving viewers to assume the family lived happily ever after. Unfortunately, the ending didn’t reveal what became of Fanny.

Just a few episodes before the end of Outlander, it was revealed that Fanny Pocock could also travel through time. While near the river at Fraser’s Ridge, she started experiencing the familiar buzzing sound associated with time travel. This confirmed she was Claire’s granddaughter, but the reveal didn’t actually impact the show’s finale, which was strange. It felt like the story point was included only to potentially set up a future spinoff series.

What Fanny’s Time-Travel Ability Means For The Outlander Franchise

The time travel element introduced with Fanny in Outlander season 8 felt pointless and was ultimately unresolved. Even though the finale revisited the scene with the river, it didn’t seem to connect to the main story’s ending. It’s likely Starz is building towards a new spin-off series, perhaps to continue the Outlander universe beyond the current show and its existing spin-off, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Fanny is a new character, appearing only in season 7 of Outlander, so it’s unlikely she’d be the main focus of a spinoff series. A more likely idea would be a show centered around Jamie and Claire’s grandchildren. This would create a good balance, as there’s already a spinoff about Jamie and Claire’s parents. With Blood of My Blood, Outlander, and a potential series about Jemmy, Mandy, and Fanny, the franchise could cover four generations and centuries of time travel.

A potential Outlander spinoff could also explore the story of Faith in more detail, as some parts of her journey remain unresolved from season 8. We know Faith was brought back to life and raised in France, but the specifics of how and why Master Raymond did this were never explained. A spinoff focusing on Fanny and her relatives, if they were to travel through time, could potentially uncover those missing answers.

A ‘Next Generation’ Outlander Spinoff Would Solve Other Hanging Mysteries

While the reveal of Fanny’s time travel is a major cliffhanger from Outlander, it’s not the only unanswered question. Several important mysteries from previous seasons were never fully explained. One key example is the prophecy about a future Scottish king linked to a 200-year-old child. This prophecy drove Geillis Duncan to try and travel through time and kill Brianna, Claire’s daughter, but after Claire stopped Geillis, the prophecy was never mentioned again.

A future Outlander series focusing on the children of the current characters could help solve some lingering questions, maybe by introducing a new baby who travels through time or bringing Brianna back into the story. This could also connect to a prophecy from the Outlander: Blood of My Blood book, which suggested that a future Scottish leader would be a descendant of Jamie Fraser’s family. While this hasn’t become a major plot point yet, the show still has the opportunity to develop it. It remains to be seen what will happen, but it’s obvious that Outlander has more stories to tell.
