Masked man who entered Punch the viral monkey’s enclosure arrested

Okay, so this is crazy! Someone actually jumped into the enclosure of Punch, you know, that adorable baby macaque who’s become super famous in Japan? I saw the videos and can’t believe someone would do that!

On May 17, 2026, officials at Ichikawa City Zoo and Botanical Gardens reported that someone had gotten into the monkey exhibit.

Zoo employees stopped the two men and then called the police. One of the men is believed to have recorded the incident.

Authorities believe the two individuals involved are American citizens, and they are currently investigating whether the incident interfered with business operations.

Masked intruder breaks into Punch’s enclosure

Around 10:50 a.m. today, someone entered the monkey mountain area without permission. We’ve turned both the intruder and another individual over to the police.

We immediately checked the animals and facilities for safety. While a section of the viewing area is temporarily closed and security has been increased, the zoo will stay open today until 4:30 p.m.

Video of the incident has rapidly spread online, showing someone in a costume entering the monkey enclosure. The monkeys immediately climbed to higher ground, and a staff member then escorted the person out.

On May 17, 2026, someone dressed in a mascot costume unexpectedly entered the monkey enclosure, causing the monkeys to become frightened and scramble for safety, climbing up the enclosure’s structures. This act was a senseless publicity stunt and demonstrated a complete lack of consideration for the animals and the zoo itself.

As soon as the video went viral, Memecoin, a cryptocurrency based on internet memes, stated that a member of their community, dressed as their official mascot, was responsible.

On May 17th, a spokesperson stated that the zoo was aware of an incident that happened earlier that morning. A visitor dressed in the zoo’s mascot costume entered the enclosure of Punch, a popular animal at Ichikawa Zoo in Tokyo.

Okay, so everyone’s saying no monkeys were actually hurt, and apparently, the person involved just wanted to give Punch – that’s the monkey, by the way – a new teddy bear to have as a friend. Sounds a little weird, but that’s the story they’re sticking to.

Gmemecoin team here. We’re addressing the incident that happened earlier today at Ichikawa Zoo in Tokyo. Someone dressed in our mascot costume entered the enclosure for Punch the gorilla, carrying a teddy bear resembling themselves. First and foremost, we want to say…

Memecoin also announced plans to donate ¥1,000,000 (approximately $6,295) to the zoo to help improve the monkey enclosure and support the staff’s animal care efforts.

After the incident, Ichikawa City Zoo and Botanical Gardens reported the damage to the police and said they were increasing security around the monkey enclosure.

The zoo plans to make restricted areas larger, add netting to stop people from getting too close, and have dedicated security guards watch the monkey habitat. They are also thinking about prohibiting all filming near the enclosure after what happened.
