In Just 1 Day, Netflix’s Hit Crime Drama Spinoff Is Already the No. 1 Show in the World

Netflix launched its most successful non-English language show to date in 2017 with Money Heist. Though the original series has concluded, the story continues with its first spin-off, Berlin.

The new series Berlin is a prequel to Money Heist, taking place before the death of the main character in the original show. It launched in 2023 and quickly became a global success, according to FlixPatrol, becoming a hit immediately after its release on May 15th.

The new season, titled Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, has quickly become the most popular show worldwide on Netflix. It hit number one in 21 countries on its first day and expanded to reach the top spot in 44 countries by its second day. While it started at number 10 in the U.S., its popularity has been rapidly growing.

What Happens in Berlin?

Fans of the original Money Heist will recall that characters weren’t known by their real names – they used city names instead. Berlin was a particularly popular character, known for his wit, charm, and heartbreaking story. Due to his popularity, Netflix created a prequel series focusing on Berlin in 2023.

I was hooked from the first season, Berlin and the Jewels of Paris, which showed Berlin pulling off an incredible heist in Paris – gathering a team and actually managing to steal millions in diamonds! Now, I’m so excited for Season 2 because they’re back for another adventure, and I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.

The second season, consisting of eight episodes, brings back Pedro Alonso as the famous character, now with a new crew. Joining him are Michelle Jenner (known from Isabel) as Keila, a skilled electronic engineer; Tristán Ulloa (Fariña) as Damián, a kind professor and Berlin’s close friend; Begoña Vargas (Welcome to Eden) as Cameron, a risk-taking daredevil; Julio Peña Fernández (Through My Window) as Roi, Berlin’s loyal companion; and Joel Sánchez as Bruce, the group’s determined and forceful muscle.

In Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, the team devises a bold new plan, starting with a request from the Duke of Málaga: to steal Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, The Lady with an Ermine. The story unfolds in Seville as the team attempts what could be the most ingenious heist ever conceived—a plan so clever it’s a masterpiece in its own right.

The Money Heist Franchise Continues

The show initially ran for five seasons, concluding in 2021, and then returned as a spinoff in 2023. Before the second season of the Berlin spinoff arrives, Netflix has announced more shows are in development. While details haven’t been released yet, the streaming service is planning several additional series.

It all began with a bold move, and this story changed everything. From small-time robberies to the daring heist of the century – including a risky attempt to steal tons of gold from the Bank of Spain – the world of Money Heist has constantly expanded and kept us guessing. But one thing is certain: the fight for change never stops. This is now the central hub for everything related to Money Heist. If you want to stay informed about the next adventure and follow every move the crew makes, this is where you need to be.

Despite being released some time ago, Money Heist is still Netflix’s second most popular show originally made outside of English-speaking countries. Season 4 is fourth on the list of most-watched shows, racking up 106 million views in its first 91 days. Seasons 5 and 3 also performed incredibly well, attracting 99.2 million and 80 million views respectively during their first 91 days.

Berlin is streaming on Netflix.
