How Stephen Colbert Is Heading Out

Next week marks the end of an era for The Late Show on CBS, as Stephen Colbert hosts his final episodes. Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed will take over the late-night time slot afterward. Colbert is going out with a bang after a year of great guests and memorable moments, like Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s recent appearance as Selina Meyer. The final week begins with an episode titled “The Worst of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” which CBS says won’t be a simple clip show, but rather a self-deprecating look back. Tuesday’s show will feature Colbert’s former boss from The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, along with director Steven Spielberg and a special performance by David Byrne of the Talking Heads and Colbert himself. On Wednesday, the second-to-last episode, Colbert will be the subject of The Colbert Questionert, a popular segment usually hosted by him, with some surprise guests. Former President Barack Obama recently participated in the segment. Bruce Springsteen will also perform that night.

The network isn’t sharing many details about Stephen Colbert’s final episode on Thursday, simply calling it “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Series Finale.” Colbert has already publicly stated who he hopes will be his last guest: Pope Leo XIV. He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that, as a devout Catholic, the Pope is his long-sought guest. He even wrote a letter, playfully addressing the Pope as “Your Holiness” and requesting an appearance, adding they didn’t need to discuss politics. Since no guests have been announced yet, it’s possible Colbert will get his wish.
