New Sora 2 AI Mario And Pikachu Videos Seem Primed For Nintendo Lawsuits

Nintendo is well-known for strongly defending its intellectual property, like the Mario characters and the Pokémon world. But OpenAI’s recently launched Sora 2 features a surprising number of Nintendo characters, almost as if it’s challenging the company to take legal action. Sora 2 is a tool that uses AI to create videos and audio; you provide a description – similar to how image generators work – and it produces a video based on your input.

I was reading The New York Times, and they’re reporting that OpenAI has been contacting big copyright owners and celebrities about getting their work removed from Sora 2. It’s interesting because it’s not clear if they’ve done the same thing with Nintendo. But honestly, if you look at how much Pokémon and Mario stuff is showing up in Sora 2 videos, it seems pretty obvious that the AI learned a *lot* from Nintendo’s stuff – like, they definitely trained it using Nintendo’s intellectual property. It’s a big deal, and I wonder how Nintendo will react!

I’ve been using Sora 2, and honestly, my main takeaway is that OpenAI seems to be inviting a lawsuit. It’s overwhelmingly what the app displays right when you open it – about 99% of the initial content.

Sora 2 caused a huge buzz online yesterday.
It lets you recreate scenes from well-known movies.
Everything is created using 100% artificial intelligence – it’s a parody!
1. Imagine “Star Wars” reimagined with Mario and his friends as the characters.

I’m really enjoying a new trend I’ve seen in the Sora app: people are inserting Pikachu into all sorts of movies.
Here’s an example, titled “Saving Private Pikachu” 👇

It’s not just Nintendo’s characters and worlds that seem to have been used to train Sora 2. Games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Portal have also been combined and reimagined within the AI model.

As a big Nintendo fan, I’m really wondering what they’re going to do about Sora 2! It feels like just yesterday they were coming after people for making AI pictures of Mario. Honestly, knowing Nintendo’s history – they’re known for really protecting their intellectual property – I can’t imagine they’ll just let this go. It seems pretty likely they’ll take some kind of action, especially given how famous they are for being litigious.

A report from earlier this year indicated discussions between Disney and OpenAI. However, Disney later chose to sue Midjourney, claiming they misused movies and images. George R.R. Martin, along with several other authors, had previously filed a lawsuit against OpenAI as well.

More Japanese game companies are starting to use AI tools when making games, but companies like OpenAI and Midjourney aren’t officially working *with* them. Nintendo is being careful about adopting AI; Shigeru Miyamoto has explained they don’t want to jump into it as quickly as some other developers. Doug Bowser, who is stepping down as president of Nintendo of America, thinks AI *will* be part of game creation in the future. However, he also emphasizes how important it is to keep a human touch in the game development process.
