How to Get and Use Salt in Subnautica 2

In Subnautica 2, you’ll be exploring a salty ocean, but the seawater itself isn’t directly usable for crafting. You’ll need to find and collect crystallized Salt deposits instead. Luckily, Salt isn’t too difficult to find, even before you unlock the Sonic Resonator which helps locate larger deposits.

Following the directions from NOA will lead you to where you can collect Salt, but only after you’ve located Anita’s Black Box. You can get Salt sooner if you prefer, though.

Finding Salt

Once you’ve located Anita’s Black Box, your next goal is to find Chap’s Black Box. The area surrounding Chap’s habitat is also a source of Salt, which you can collect without needing a Sonic Resonator. You won’t find a huge amount here, but it’s a good place to start gathering and storing Salt back at your base for later.

Chap’s habitat is located about 200 meters southeast of the Lifepod. Look for a small cave-like opening – the entrance to the habitat is inside. You can find small Salt deposits around that entrance. For larger Salt deposits, head about 230 meters southeast of the Lifepod, past Chap’s habitat. You’ll find both small and large Salt nodes there, but you’ll need a Sonic Resonator to collect the larger ones.

Using Salt

Salt is a useful ingredient in crafting. You’ll need it to make important items like Power Cells and Power Storage, which are essential for powering vehicles. It’s also used to create storage containers like the Tailing Jar, and can even be used as an alternative ingredient for crafting Glass.

Salt is a common ingredient in cooking and is also needed to make Isotonic Water, which is more hydrating than plain water. Because of its versatility, it’s useful to collect a good amount of Salt. However, until you get the Sonic Resonator, it’s best to prioritize using Salt for Power Cells and Power Storage, as gathering more Salt will be challenging without it.

Like Titanium, you’ll use a lot of Salt. But Salt is harder to find than Titanium, so be careful how you use it at the beginning of the game. You won’t need it for everything – not all recipes or even for drinking water – so plan your Salt usage carefully in Subnautica 2 until you can easily collect more.
