So, Jon Favreau, the guy behind The Mandalorian and Grogu’s adventures, finally talked about all the buzz when fans found out about Rotta the Hutt being cast. It was a big surprise for a lot of us, and he explained how he handled the reaction when the news leaked before the episode aired.
In December 2024, news broke that Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, would be voicing Rotta the Hutt—Jabba the Hutt’s son—in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Because Rotta hasn’t been seen in Star Wars for a long time, and because of White’s Emmy-winning acting career, many fans questioned if the report was true.
During a conversation with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant about The Mandalorian and Grogu, Jon Favreau addressed the fan response to the casting of Rotta. He jokingly admitted it “does sound like mad libs,” especially after footage showed Rotta as a surprisingly muscular gladiator. Favreau said he was amused that many Star Wars fans initially believed the casting was so unusual it had to be a hoax. Here’s what he had to say:
I recall being amused at the recent Star Wars Celebration Japan by the inclusion of a muscular Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White. It just seemed… unexpected.
Jon Favreau: It does sound like mad libs.
ScreenRant: It sounds absurd.
I enjoyed how people initially reacted, thinking we were deliberately misleading them. They suspected we’d planted a false story just to trick the media into publishing something untrue. They couldn’t believe we’d do that! But now, after seeing what happened, it’s clear we weren’t playing games.
Rotta first appeared in the 2008 film The Clone Wars, where he was kidnapped by the Separatists but rescued by Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, who playfully nicknamed him ‘Stinky’. His story has remained a mystery in Star Wars canon for years, and the recent series The Book of Boba Fett – which focused on the power struggle following Jabba the Hutt’s death – only deepened the questions. Now, The Mandalorian and Grogu is finally revealing what happened to him, and also reunites us with the Hutt twins introduced in The Book of Boba Fett.
The recent marketing for the movie featured Jabba’s son as a powerful gladiator battling Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal, Lateef Crowder, and Brendan Wayne). However, a new clip reveals how their story begins. Din Djarin is tasked by Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) with traveling to Nal Hutta to negotiate with a pair of Hutt twins. They’ll assist the New Republic in locating the wanted Imperial Commander Coin (Johnny Coyne) if Din first rescues a prisoner named Rotta from a criminal organization in the Outer Rim.
Throughout the marketing campaign, hints suggest things don’t go smoothly for Din Djarin – from the Hutt twins menacing him and taking his helmet, to the intense battle in the arena. While details about Rotta’s introduction are still secret, early reactions to The Mandalorian and Grogu frequently highlight the character as a standout surprise in the movie.
In addition to characters like Rotta, Din, Grogu, Colonel Ward, Commander Coin, and the Hutt twins, Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios (voiced by Steve Blum), who originally appeared in Star Wars Rebels, will also be featured. Embo, a bounty hunter from The Clone Wars, is another returning character seen in the trailers taking off Din Djarin’s helmet. Notably, legendary director Martin Scorsese lends his voice to an Ardennian food vendor in the movie.
The actor who voices Rotta the Hutt in The Bear and The Mandalorian has a diverse range of roles. He’s portrayed Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere, Kerry von Erich in the A24 film The Iron Claw, and Lip Gallagher in Shameless. He’s also slated to appear in The Social Reckoning, a new film connected to The Social Network, where he’ll play former Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz.
The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22.
