But despite these serious themes, there’s also plenty of humor and joy within the world of Middle-earth. It’s this balance between darkness and light that makes the story so compelling.
The Shire, home to many cheerful Hobbits in the world of Lord of the Rings, is a place full of lightheartedness. Bilbo Baggins, a central character throughout the series, embodies the Shire’s joyful spirit in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. He’s particularly funny, and many fans consider his line during his 111th birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring to be the most humorous moment in the entire franchise.
Bilbo Baggins Secretly Took a Shot at His Party Guests
I’ll never forget Bilbo’s speech at his eleventy-first birthday! It started off normally, thanking everyone for coming to the party, which was lovely. But then he said something so wonderfully honest – he admitted he didn’t know half the guests as well as he’d like, and even liked less than half of them as much as they deserved! It was such a funny and endearing thing to say, and it really stuck with me.
This curious line comes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, in the chapter titled “A Long-Expected Party.” Tolkien explained that many hobbits didn’t applaud Bilbo’s speech because they were too busy figuring out if he was actually giving them a compliment – a detail that was also shown in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation.
Fortunately, readers and listeners of The Lord of the Rings can revisit Bilbo’s words as often as needed to fully understand them. While he sometimes expresses himself in a complicated way, the first sentence is actually quite simple: he was just explaining what he wanted to do.
The second sentence is a bit confusing because it can be understood in two different ways. It could mean he generally liked hobbits, but unfairly disliked a small number of them. Or, it could mean he only liked a small group of hobbits and disliked everyone else.
Bilbo Baggins Regretted His Time in the Shire
Tolkien, being a language expert, surely noticed this double meaning and likely enjoyed it. Bilbo’s statement wasn’t just a joke; it also revealed his sadness about how he’d lived his life. He was a friendly person, as shown by his relationships, and he stayed close to the dwarves who had traveled with Thorin Oakenshield.
Even so, Bilbo struggled to connect with the other people of the Shire. He was known as a grumpy and solitary figure. This could have been because his love of adventure no longer fit with the quiet life of the Shire, but the Ring might have also influenced him, making him distrustful of others over time.
Bilbo was a surprisingly emotional hobbit, and even though he was leaving the Shire for good, he felt bad about not showing his neighbors enough kindness and attention. He covered up these feelings with jokes, so most of them didn’t realize how he truly felt. His farewells, like much about Bilbo, held a deeper meaning than people understood at first.
