As a big fan of sci-fi, I’ve stumbled across this really cool show on Prime Video that I think deserves more attention. It’s a clever mix of genres – it feels like the gritty, mystery-focused storytelling of Bosch combined with the complex, mind-bending plot of Dark. You know how genres are helpful for finding things you like, but sometimes they can box creators in? That’s especially true with sci-fi, where sticking too closely to the rules can really hurt a show. The best sci-fi, in my opinion, is the stuff that breaks those norms and does its own thing.
As a longtime fan of genre television, I’ve always been struck by how the most memorable shows aren’t afraid to mix things up. Think about The Twilight Zone – it wasn’t just sci-fi, it was horror and fantasy, all rolled into one. Doctor Who has done the same, seamlessly blending science fiction with historical dramas and fantastical elements over six decades. Even The X-Files wasn’t just about aliens; it was a unique combination of sci-fi, police work, mystery, and genuine scares. And who would have thought a Western could work in space? Firefly proved it could! What these shows all have in common is a willingness to experiment, and honestly, I think that’s the key to creating truly lasting television. It’s when creators push boundaries and aren’t afraid to blend genres that the real magic happens.
British writer Tom Moran achieved a unique effect with his show, The Devil’s Hour. Though it might seem like a fantasy, the show doesn’t involve any supernatural elements. Instead, it successfully combines the suspense of a mystery and the structure of a police procedural – similar to Bosch – while also evolving into a complex sci-fi series reminiscent of Dark.
The Devil’s Hour Is As Mysterious As It Is Mindbending
The series The Devil’s Hour centers on Lucy, a woman who mysteriously wakes up at 3:33 am each night, a time known as the ‘devil’s hour,’ and experiences frightening visions. Her family is also dealing with strange occurrences – her young son seems to see things that aren’t there, and her mother carries on conversations with empty chairs. The situation becomes even more unsettling when Lucy finds herself linked to a series of violent crimes.
The show The Devil’s Hour was poorly advertised. It was promoted as a simple drama-thriller, which didn’t attract viewers who enjoy sci-fi and mystery—the genres it actually belongs to. It’s a slow-burning mystery like Bosch, but also features complex time loops reminiscent of the Netflix series Dark. I can’t say much more about the similarities without giving away key plot points, but fans of Dark should definitely enjoy it.
Prime Video’s Cerebral Sci-Fi Mystery Can Be Binged In 1 Weekend
I absolutely loved how easy it was to get lost in The Devil’s Hour – I binged it so quickly! Even though it takes its time unfolding, I was hooked with each episode. And the acting? Phenomenal, especially with Peter Capaldi leading the cast. What I really enjoyed, though, was trying to piece together the mystery myself – it felt like the show was presenting you with a puzzle, and it was so fun to try and solve it before the big reveals!
Plus, this show doesn’t take long to watch compared to many others. With only six episodes in the first season and five in the second, a dedicated viewer could potentially finish both seasons in a single day, though that would be a challenge! It’s perfect for a free weekend – you could watch season one on Saturday and season two on Sunday.
The Devil’s Hour Season 3 Is Already On The Way
If you’re planning a binge-watch of The Devil’s Hour on Prime Video, you’ll be glad to know the show isn’t over after season 2! It’s already been renewed for both seasons 2 and 3. The creator originally envisioned a three-season arc, meaning the full story will be told by the end of season 3.
While Prime Video hasn’t announced a release date yet, we expect season 3 of The Devil’s Hour to arrive around late 2026, judging by how long previous seasons have taken to produce. It’s shaping up to be another great season – the show consistently receives high praise, currently holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and previous seasons have successfully wrapped up major storylines, suggesting a satisfying conclusion is on the way.
