Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Dutton Ranch, “The Untold Want” and “Earn Another Day.” Dutton Ranch is a continuation of the Yellowstone story, but the new series, created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, initially feels a bit confusing. It follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) after the events of Yellowstone.
In the final episode of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip establish a home on their own ranch, located 40 miles west of Dillon, Montana, with their son, Carter. They leave the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch after Kayce Dutton sells the family land back to the Broken Rock Reservation.
In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip move to South Texas and start a new life with a ranch in Rio Paloma. Rip focuses on cattle and running the ranch, while Beth builds a business selling beef. However, the Dutton-Wheelers quickly find themselves facing new conflicts, particularly with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), the owner of the 10-Petals Ranch.
Dutton Ranch Happens One Year After Yellowstone Ends
According to Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser in an interview with People magazine, the new series Dutton Ranch will begin one year after the events of Yellowstone. This time jump is comparable to the approach taken by CBS’s Marshals, which also continues the story of Kayce and Tate Dutton (played by Brecken Merrill) a year following their departure from Yellowstone to East Camp.
The story of Dutton Ranch starts with a peaceful time for Beth and Rip, who are very much in love. However, their happiness is shattered when a wildfire destroys their ranch and a large area near Dillon, Montana. This disaster forces them to relocate to Texas.
Okay, so after the devastating fire, the new season of Dutton Ranch jumps ahead six months. When we catch up, Beth and Rip are fully in charge – they’ve rebranded the ranch and are really trying to get a wholesale beef operation off the ground. The second episode, “Earn Another Day,” is fascinating because it flashes back to show us how Beth and Rip actually managed to buy the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma – it gives you a lot of context for their current situation.
The timeline of Dutton Ranch seems straightforward on its own. But when considered alongside the larger Yellowstone universe – specifically how it connects with Kayce Dutton’s work in Marshals – the future paths of both Yellowstone sequels become less clear and less consistent with each other.
Dutton Ranch & Marshals’ Post-Yellowstone Timeline Is Confusing
The new show, Dutton Ranch, starts a year after the events of Yellowstone, but the timeline gets tricky. The premiere jumps ahead six months, and a major fire is shown as a flashback happening six months before the current events in Dutton Ranch. This raises the question: does that mean the fire in Dillon, Montana actually happened a full year after Yellowstone ended?
Or does the story of Beth and Rip on the Dutton Ranch truly begin a year later in Rio Paloma? By that point, they’ve already been running their South Texas ranch for half a year. As shown in a flashback during the second episode of Dutton Ranch, they headed to Texas right after the fire, following a lead from Walker (Ryan Bingham) about the Edwards Ranch.
The new series Marshals introduces some confusing timeline issues following the end of Yellowstone. In episode 6, there’s a memorial for Monica Long Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), and we learn she passed away a year before the events of Marshals. However, it’s unclear exactly when she was diagnosed with cancer after Yellowstone ended, or how long she battled the disease.
In the second episode of Marshals, Rip is mentioned, and Beth is referenced in episode seven. Kayce asks Rip for help with extra hands at East Camp after he becomes a U.S. Marshal. Considering the timeline of Dutton Ranch, when did this phone call happen? Were Beth and Rip still living in Montana before the fire, or had they already moved to Rio Paloma?
The exact order of events in the Yellowstone universe has always been a little unclear, even with all the new shows adding to the Dutton family’s story. If a crossover happens between the Dutton Ranch and Marshals series, it might help straighten out the timeline after the original Yellowstone ends.
Even though they’re separate shows, Marshals and Dutton Ranch – spin-offs featuring Kayce and Beth – continue the Dutton family’s story, taking place in different locations and airing on different channels.
