This filmmaker has a long history of seamlessly combining television and film. In 2025, they notably paired the movie A Minecraft Movie with an original series from Apple TV+.
Despite being well-received by both critics and viewers, the historical series Chief of War hasn’t been renewed for a second season. Jason Momoa recently discussed the possibility of Season 2 while promoting his show, which just launched its second season, in an interview with The Playlist.
Jason Momoa Gives Chief of War Update
The Aquaman star addressed questions about a second season of the historical drama, clarifying that the delay isn’t due to a lack of ideas. He stated, “It’s absolutely not about the story – we have plenty of material.”
Momoa explained that the show was always planned as a limited series, and that’s what everyone agreed upon. They’re currently hoping for award recognition, which could influence the future of the show. Right now, they’re waiting to see what happens next and are unsure of its continuation.
Originally planned as a one-time series, the historical epic gained momentum after Jason Momoa expressed hope for future seasons in an interview with Hawaii News Now. He mentioned they were aiming for Seasons 2 and 3 and expected to know more by September 2025, but no official announcement has been made yet.
Jason Momoa is incredibly busy right now. While he’s known for playing Aquaman (Arthur Curry) in the DC Extended Universe, he’s returning to the DC world with a new role.
This year, he’s also working on Street Fighter, playing the character Blanka, and Dune: Part Three. He’ll be taking on a new role in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series after his character was killed off in the 2021 film. He’s returning as Hayt this time. Filming for the project has also begun.
Chief of War Was a Hit
Jason Momoa delivers a particularly intense performance in this historical drama, playing the war chief Ka’iana – his most physically demanding role since his time on Game of Thrones. He developed the series with Thomas Paʻa Sibbett, and the pair also served as executive producers with a large team including Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, Doug Jung, Tracey Cook, Brian Andrew Mendoza, Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, and Tim Van Patten.
Inspired by real history, Chief of War is set in the late 1700s when the four main Hawaiian Islands – Hawaiʻi, Maui, Oʻahu, and Kauaʻi – were constantly battling each other. The story centers on Kaʻiana, a powerful warrior chief from Maui. After traveling abroad, he returns home and becomes a key figure in the violent struggle to unite the islands under the future king, Kamehameha I.
Critics loved the series, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 92% and highlighting its realistic portrayal of events. Viewers also enjoyed it, with an 84% approval rating.
Chief of War is streaming on Apple TV.
