Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Is Officially Returning With A New Story Connie In 2027

As a huge fan of The Godfather trilogy, I’m so excited to hear that in 2027, we’ll finally get a brand new story taking place in that incredible world Francis Ford Coppola created! It’s going to be amazing to revisit that universe and see what happens next.

Francis Ford Coppola directed the highly praised films The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), both based on Mario Puzo’s novel. He later finished the story with The Godfather Part III in 1990, focusing on Al Pacino’s character, Michael Corleone. Now, a new project will explore the Godfather story again, this time through the eyes of someone connected to Michael.

As a huge fan of The Godfather, I was thrilled to read that Random House is publishing a new novel called Connie, authorized by the Puzo estate! It’s written by Adriana Trigiani and will tell the story of Connie Corleone – you know, Michael’s sister, brilliantly played by Talia Shire. It’s fascinating to me that Talia Shire is also known for her role as Adrian in the Rocky films – and she’s Francis Ford Coppola’s sister, which adds another layer of connection to this whole thing! I can’t wait to see what Trigiani does with Connie’s story.

In the official announcement about the new novel coming in 2027, Trigliana revealed some details about the storyline involving a character named Connie.

“Connie” tells the story of a woman fighting to define herself in a world that has already made assumptions about her identity and worth. Just as people underestimated Don Vito and Michael Corleone with dangerous consequences, they will underestimate Connie at their own risk.

This novel is the fourth book in The Godfather series, continuing the story that began with the original in 1969. Mario Puzo later wrote The Sicilian in 1984, which was made into a film of the same name in 1987. Interestingly, the movie version of The Sicilian didn’t include any connections to The Godfather story.

After Mario Puzo passed away in 1999, the world of The Godfather continued in three additional novels written by other authors. Mark Winegardner wrote The Godfather Returns in 2004 and The Godfather’s Revenge in 2006. The Godfather Returns unfolds at the same time as the events in The Godfather Part II, while The Godfather’s Revenge picks up the story after the film, covering the years 1963 to 1964.

In 2012, Ed Falco published The Family Corleone, a prequel novel exploring Vito Corleone’s early life during the Great Depression. The book was based on an unused screenplay by Mario Puzo, but Paramount Pictures initially tried to prevent its release. This led to a lawsuit from the Puzo estate, which was eventually settled. The agreement allowed the estate to continue publishing novels related to The Godfather, while Paramount gained the rights to adapt them into films.

Paramount might make a movie based on the character Connie if they like the story Trigliana has created. After The Godfather Part III came out, there was talk of a fourth Godfather film, and Andy García, who played Vincent Corleone, said a script was even written. However, the project never moved forward.

The three Godfather films have received widespread critical acclaim, including numerous Academy Awards. The original Godfather won three Oscars and was nominated for five more, while The Godfather Part II earned six Oscars and three additional nominations. The Godfather Part III received seven Oscar nominations. In 2023, a revised version of The Godfather Part II, called The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, was released.
