The cancellation of HBO’s Westworld in 2022 feels even more disappointing now. The show, which first aired in 2016 and ran for four seasons, was a complex science fiction story about incredibly realistic robots—called hosts—and their struggles for independence. It was based on the 1973 film Westworld by Michael Crichton, also set in a Wild West theme park where guests interact with lifelike robots, though the series quickly took its own path.
The fourth season of Westworld concluded with Dolores Abernathy creating a test to decide the fate of all conscious beings, effectively returning the show to a recreation of the original park. This paved the way for a fifth and final season intended to revisit the themes of the first season and wrap up the complex storyline. However, HBO canceled the show in 2022, and it was subsequently removed from their streaming service, meaning that planned conclusion will never be seen.
Four years after it was cancelled, Westworld is getting a fresh start as a movie. Warner Bros. has hired David Koepp – known for writing blockbusters like Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Jurassic World Rebirth – to write the screenplay. He’s also working on a new sci-fi film with Steven Spielberg called Disclosure Day. While the original HBO show’s cancellation was disappointing, this reboot feels even more frustrating.
Warner Bros.’ New Westworld Movie Proves HBO Was Wrong To Cancel Westworld
Westworld was a major disappointment when it was cancelled, especially considering how strong it started. The first season was truly exceptional – one of the best TV seasons ever made. Although later seasons weren’t quite as good, they were still captivating, with incredible acting, well-developed characters, surprising storylines, exciting action, and fascinating questions about consciousness.
The show truly excelled in developing its characters – Dolores, Maeve Millay, Bernard Lowe, William, Robert Ford, Teddy Flood, Caleb, and the others – and their stories deserved a fitting conclusion. It’s disappointing that HBO didn’t capitalize on this strong foundation to create a satisfying ending, especially now that Warner Bros. is revisiting the Westworld universe.
Warner Bros.’ decision demonstrates they now realize how valuable this franchise is, which should have been clear from the start. Had they recognized its worth earlier, the creators – Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, and the team – would have been allowed to finish the story, and the show wouldn’t have been taken off HBO Max.
Westworld Season 5 Is Still The IP’s Best Future
Both the original 1973 film and the 2016 television series Westworld were initially praised for their innovative take on artificial intelligence and the development of lifelike hosts. However, in the years since the show first aired, countless other stories exploring AI have emerged, becoming a common theme in our lives. This makes a reboot of the movie less likely to feel fresh, particularly if it revisits the familiar storyline of hosts gaining sentience within a Wild West theme park for the third time.
No matter what the new movie does, it’s unlikely to be as compelling as what Westworld season 5 could have been. The idea of Dolores’ final test – revisiting the original Westworld park to determine the fate of conscious machines after everything that happened over four seasons – is still a much more exciting concept than starting the story over. It also feels fresh and unique compared to other recent AI-themed stories.
As a huge fan of Westworld, I was so excited to hear Nolan say he’d like to finish the show! It’s great that stars like Wood, Marsden, and Paul are all up for returning too – honestly, we’re all dying to know how the story ends! I know it might be tricky to pull off, but with so many of the original team wanting to come back, it just makes more sense to wrap up the existing plot instead of starting something completely new. Please bring Westworld back to finish what it started!
