Tracker Season 3 Quietly Confirms Justin Hartley’s Most Frustrating Replacement Problem

Fans have noticed a potential connection between Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) and Reenie Green (Fiona Rene) for a while now, but after three seasons, Colter remains single. This continues in Episode 20, “Reclamation,” with the return of another romantic interest, Billie Matalon (Sofia Pernas), as their work brings them together on a new case.

Following the first season of Tracker, actor Justin Hartley discussed his character Colter’s romantic prospects. He explained that Colter intentionally avoids relationships because he believes it would be unfair to involve a partner and family in his dangerous line of work. However, despite his efforts, those close to Colter have already been put at risk, suggesting his love life could be explored further.

Billie Matalon’s Tracker Season 3 Return Is Missing Romance

The woman Colter pursues and falls for shares surprising similarities with Shaw. Interestingly, the actress who plays Billie, Sofia Pernas, is married to Justin Hartley, who plays Colter, creating a real-life connection between them. Despite this, the show has kept the romantic relationship between Colter and Billie intentionally unclear.

Billie is first introduced in Episode 6, “Lexington,” where she and Colter are both investigating a missing animal – her, a horse, and him, a person. There’s an immediate connection between them, and they almost kiss in Colter’s truck, but their connection doesn’t develop further until Billie reappears in the second season of Tracker. This time, Matalon finds himself in a dangerous situation while working undercover for Colter, bringing Billie back into the mix.

In “The Grey Goose,” Colter searches for a missing prison guard while Billie goes undercover in the women’s prison to gather information. Matalon finds herself in several fights, forced to defend herself against some of the most dangerous inmates. The episode concludes with Colter visiting Billie at her hotel, and the two share their first kiss.

When Billie reappears in Season 3 of Tracker, episode 20, “Reclamation,” the show doesn’t develop a romantic connection between her and Colter. While Billie brings Colter pizza and wine, the moment feels more friendly than romantic. This continues a pattern in Season 3 where Colter hasn’t had much romantic development, which has been frustrating for viewers.

As a fan, I was really hoping Season 3 of Tracker would finally explore the connection between Colter and Billy, especially with Pernas guest starring! It’s a shame it didn’t happen. Honestly, the show still feels like it’s missing something emotionally. They briefly suggested a spark between Colter and Reenie, the lawyer who helps with his missing persons cases, but that didn’t really go anywhere either. I’m still hoping they’ll find a compelling relationship dynamic for the characters.

Tracker Must Replace Colter’s Original Romance In Season 4

Throughout the first season of Tracker, Colter and Reenie share a strong connection. However, actor Justin Hartley suggested that a romantic relationship between them would change Colter’s character for the worse. He believes that focusing on a relationship, and potentially putting Reenie in danger, would make Colter act recklessly and selfishly, undermining the heroic qualities that define him – especially if she worried about his safety while he was on missions.

The show Tracker hasn’t created a strong new romantic connection for Colter to replace the dynamic he had with Reenie in the first season, and his love life has taken a backseat lately. Furthermore, Colter’s stated reasons for avoiding romance now seem weak, considering how much danger both Billie and Reenie have faced in recent seasons.

Even though Hartley had his reasons, things take a turn for the worse when Green is kidnapped in the nineteenth episode of Tracker Season 2. This happens after she’s dealt with several dangerous cases that have left her genuinely afraid. Ultimately, Colter would likely be able to support and protect Reenie much better—both physically and emotionally—if they had a closer relationship.

Honestly, I don’t buy Hartley’s reasoning for why Colter is single – it just doesn’t fit Billie’s character at all. She’s constantly putting herself in dangerous situations with her bounty hunting, but she always manages to handle things and protect herself. It really makes me wonder why the show hasn’t given Colter a romantic storyline; there’s no real explanation for why he’s not involved with anyone, and I think audiences would definitely enjoy seeing that side of him.

Viewers of Tracker haven’t seen much development in Colter’s personal life lately, beyond his difficult work and search for answers about his family. A developing romance could give his character more depth and re-engage audiences, especially as Tracker’s ratings are declining while Marshals is gaining popularity.
