Star Wars Officially Sets Up Cal Kestis’ Live-Action Debut In New Luke Skywalker Spinoff

Cal Kestis, the main character from the video games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, is officially joining the live-action Star Wars universe. As a survivor of Order 66, his story has been established through the games and a novel called Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars, all of which are considered official parts of the Star Wars story by Disney.

During the Empire’s rule, Cal Kestis isn’t keeping a low profile – his face is all over wanted posters on Coruscant. He consistently overcomes challenges from Inquisitors, even surviving clashes with Darth Vader, and becomes a key part of the Hidden Path, a smuggling network we first saw in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Despite this, aside from a brief appearance by a copy of his droid, BD-1, in The Book of Boba Fett, Cal hasn’t been officially featured in any of the live-action or animated Star Wars stories. That could be about to change, though.

On May 12, 2026, Star Wars released a new reference book called Star Wars: Secrets of the Jedi: The Chronicles of Luke Skywalker, written by Marc Sumerak. This book is an updated edition of Sumerak’s earlier Secrets of the Jedi, and it incorporates everything new that’s been added to the Star Wars universe – including movies, TV shows, books, and video games – since 2019.

This book is told from Luke Skywalker’s point of view and provides an in-depth look at the history of the Jedi, their friends, and key characters who fight for the light side. A major reveal in Star Wars: Secrets of the Jedi: The Chronicles of Luke Skywalker is that Luke was aware Cal Kestis survived the events of Order 66. Considering how far apart their stories take place in the Star Wars timeline, this discovery could significantly impact Cal’s future within the franchise.

How Cal Kestis Can Join Star Wars’ Live-Action Canon

Within the Star Wars story, Luke Skywalker writes this book after the events of the first three films. This takes place long after the story of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is set nine years before Luke destroys the Death Star in A New Hope and thirteen years before he saves Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. Luke might have learned about Cal Kestis’ adventures secondhand, through stories or while studying Jedi history. However, it’s also possible that Cal is still alive after the Empire falls.

Cal Kestis was just a Padawan when the Jedi were nearly destroyed during Order 66, meaning he’s still quite young in both Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. His continued survival into the New Republic era isn’t unusual – similar to how Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, is still alive during this period of Star Wars. In fact, it would make a lot of sense for Cal to appear in The Mandalorian and its related shows. This would allow him to interact with other Jedi like Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Ezra Bridger (from Star Wars Rebels) without disrupting the events of the original Star Wars trilogy.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been thinking about what happened after Return of the Jedi. Luke’s trying to bring back the Jedi, and honestly, he could really use some experienced voices. That got me thinking about Cal Kestis from Jedi: Fallen Order. Cal spent the whole game rescuing Force-sensitive kids – he’s all about making sure the next generation has a future. It’d be amazing if he heard about Luke’s efforts and went to help! He’d definitely feel it was his duty to contribute, and I think he’d be a fantastic mentor alongside Luke.

Cal Kestis is connected to the Nightsisters through his companion Merrin, who is one of the last of these Force-sensitive witches from the planet Dathomir. Interestingly, the Nightsisters also appear in the series Ahsoka, which is set in the same time period. In that show, Ahsoka Tano and her allies encounter them, and even Grand Admiral Thrawn brings three incredibly powerful Nightsisters back to Dathomir from another galaxy.

I have a feeling Merrin might be the link that brings Cal Kestis together with Ahsoka Tano and even Luke Skywalker. If she gets caught up in Thrawn’s plans on Dathomir, she might reach out to Cal for assistance, and that could lead them all to Ezra Bridger and Hera Syndulla – completing a really satisfying connection. We already know, thanks to The Book of Boba Fett, that Ahsoka and Luke were communicating, so this could tie everything together beautifully. And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cal showed up in the next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu. He absolutely hates the Empire, even more than Mando does, and he could be exactly who they need to stop the Empire from rising again.

I’m so excited to hear they’re already working on a third Star Wars Jedi game! I’m really curious about where it will fit into the Star Wars story. Considering the last game, Survivor, jumped ahead five years from Fallen Order, I’m guessing this next one will get even closer to the time of Luke, Leia, and the original trilogy. I’m especially hoping we get to see what happens with Cal Kestis if he makes it through – it would be amazing to see his story continue during the time of the New Republic!

For years, fans have speculated about when Cal Kestis would appear in a live-action Star Wars project. Some even thought he might have been the Jedi to rescue Grogu in The Mandalorian instead of Luke Skywalker. Now, with the established connection to Luke, a live-action appearance for Cal feels much more likely. Many believe Cameron Monaghan’s portrayal of Cal Kestis – along with his droid companion, BD-1 – deserves a place in live-action Star Wars.
