Netflix forced to remove Devil May Cry merch after misspelling main character’s name

Okay, so this is kinda embarrassing for Netflix, but they had to pull a Devil May Cry shirt from their shop. Apparently, they messed up the spelling of one of the main characters’ names! Fans quickly spotted it, and yeah, it was a pretty noticeable mistake. They fixed it, but not before everyone had a good laugh.

Netflix released its animated series based on Devil May Cry last April, and it proved popular enough for a second season to be quickly approved – just a week after the first episode became available. However, many fans thought the series didn’t do justice to the original game, and Netflix recently gave them more reason to feel that way.

Netflix misspells Vergil’s name on official Devil May Cry merch

The shirt had a design split between the characters Dante and Vergil – the latter being a famous, white-haired villain from a popular video game series that’s spanned five main titles. Both characters’ names were on the shirt, but Vergil’s name was misspelled as “Virgil.” This error appeared on official merchandise sold through the Netflix store.

Netflix removed the item, but screenshots had already spread online. A fan named @vergildearest pointed out on X (formerly Twitter): “They misspelled his name on this official shirt!”

Fans are still calling out Netflix for a mistake, replying to their promotional posts with “Can’t wait to see ‘Virgil’ in action” to highlight the error.

It was a minor typo, really. However, given how carefully fans were scrutinizing Netflix’s adaptation, it felt less like a simple mistake and more like a statement about how much the show understood the source material.

Vergil has appeared as a playable character in several Devil May Cry games – including Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, and Devil May Cry 5 – and his name has always been consistently spelled the same way.

The new season of the Devil May Cry anime just came out on Netflix, focusing on the character Vergil, and it’s already generating a lot of buzz. We’ve got all the details on the show, including why the creator secretly included a popular streamer as a hidden cameo.
