Sometimes the best way to honor a friend is with playful teasing – think of a funny wedding speech from a sibling. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her role in Sheep Detectives, did just that on Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Knowing Colbert’s final show is coming up, she asked the writers from her old show, Veep, to write a series of insults for her to deliver as her character, Selina Meyer. As Selina, she jokingly asked Colbert, while the Veep theme music played, “I’ve been on this show a lot, and I always thought you were Rachel Maddow. Aren’t you?”
Stephen Colbert is a big admirer of the show Veep, so it was a real treat for him to be playfully insulted by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played Selina Meyer. He was clearly delighted throughout the entire segment, beaming as she delivered increasingly funny, harsh, and blunt jokes. She poked fun at his name, saying, “So you’re Irish, but you decided to pronounce your name French?” adding, “That’s like putting lipstick on a pig, which I understand is what Irish people do before they… well, you know.” She also brought up politics, fitting for a former president like her character, and quipped, “Your cancellation gave Donald Trump so much pleasure that I always think of you as the Stormy Daniels of late night.” While Colbert enjoyed all the ribbing, he laughed the loudest at a joke about his own mortality. Selina said, “When my people said I should come and say farewell to you, I was hoping it was more of a hospice-type situation.” The audience loved it, and the two ended the segment on good terms with a kiss and a make-up.
