Tullius Met a Cruel Fate
The second season of the show, called “Gods of the Arena”, delved into the backstory of the House of Batiatua and what life was like in Capua before the main character arrived. Because of this focus on the past, it was pretty predictable that any new characters introduced in this prequel season who hadn’t been in the first season would likely meet an untimely end. The character of Tullius was presented as a professional competitor to Batiatus, and while their rivalry was interesting to watch, it’s difficult not to feel that Tullius suffered a particularly unfair and harsh fate, especially considering he wasn’t even at fault for what happened.
In the final episode, titled “The Bitter End”, Batiatus, mistakenly believing Tullius caused his father’s death, sets a trap for him. After repeatedly stabbing Tullius, Batiatus cruelly forced him to eat the ashes of his father, and then had his men bury him alive within the colosseum’s foundations, essentially making his body a part of the building itself. While Tullius was undoubtedly a villain, Batiatus’s additional acts of torture and the way he disposed of the body were shockingly extreme, particularly given that he would later have to deal with the repercussions of Lucretia’s choices.
Crixus’ Death Delivered an Emotional Gut-Punch
Although Crixus’s death wasn’t the most physically violent on the show, it stands out for its deeply emotional impact. It was still a brutal scene, and the tragedy of his passing was clear, no matter how viewers felt about him. This death happened near the end of the season – specifically, the third-to-last episode – which made it especially difficult for the audience to accept the loss of a character they’d grown to know throughout the series.
Being pierced by Tiberius’ spear was horrific enough, but it became even worse when he made Naevia witness his decapitation. The death itself was already incredibly impactful and sad, but the way the scene was filmed elevated it further, especially the reflection of the decapitation in Naevia’s eye. It’s a death that fans still find emotionally difficult to watch, no matter how many times they re-watch it, and they always have to prepare themselves for it.
Kerza Was One of the First Major Fatalities
From the moment Kerza appeared, most viewers suspected he wouldn’t last long. However, the show had invested some effort in developing his character, so it was still surprising to see him eliminated after just three episodes. Though he wasn’t as physically imposing as the other gladiators, he showed real potential with his strength. Ultimately, it was only a matter of time before his impulsive nature and overconfidence led to his downfall. He met his end in the fourth episode of Season 1, “The Thing in the Pit“, becoming one of the show’s earliest and most vividly remembered brutal defeats, delivered by Ixion. It was a shocking moment, despite the early indications of his limited lifespan. His brief appearance left a lasting impression.
Even though he was a skilled fighter, he wasn’t considered good enough to compete in the arena, so Batiatus sent him to fight in the pit instead. While he initially seemed strong, he couldn’t defeat Ixion, who brutally killed him with a sledgehammer. Ixion went even further, cutting off his face and wearing it as a gruesome trophy. This death could have been easily overlooked, but Ixion’s cruelty made it unforgettable. It was a particularly shocking and disturbing kill, ensuring viewers wouldn’t soon forget it. The sheer brutality of the act cemented its place as one of the show’s most memorable deaths.
Acer’s Death Lasted a Long Time
While Acer didn’t make as strong an impression on viewers as many other characters, his death is still a significant moment. During Season 3, Glaber captured a group of Guar rebels and displayed them during a feast celebrating Varinius. At this gathering, Lucretia was asked to choose a rebel to be tortured for the guests’ amusement. She used her claim of receiving messages from the gods as a justification for selecting Acer.
While most deaths in Spartacus, even the violent ones, were relatively swift, this one was agonizingly drawn out for what felt like an eternity. It was horrific to watch Seppious cut out his tongue, followed by Cossutius, Gallienus, and other guests who gleefully continued the torture by removing pieces of his body. Finally, Lucretia ended his suffering with a sword thrust to the abdomen, but the prolonged, sadistic nature of this character’s death made it particularly disturbing. It truly didn’t get much worse than that.
Pericles Death Was Difficult to Watch
Similar to Acer, the character of Pericles didn’t really make a strong impression on viewers (maybe even more so, considering he only appears in one episode). However, his death was shockingly violent and, unfortunately, quite memorable for its excess. Originally, he was supposed to fight Spartacus, but the Champion of Capua was still healing from an injury. This meant the “Titan of Pompeii” ended up battling Crixus instead.
Despite being stronger and faster than his opponent, Pericles was still vulnerable due to his weak defense. Crixus seized an opportunity when the Pompeian was left without a shield or weapon, striking a blow to his stomach that caused internal injuries. He then finished the fight with a powerful stomp to the head, shattering his skull like a pumpkin. The gruesome sight of his opponent’s face collapsing, with his heel turning his brain to mush, was among the most shocking moments ever seen on the show.
Segovax Faced Multiple Humiliations Before He Died
Initially, Segovax, a slave owned by Illythia, appeared to be a promising ally for Spartacus. He demonstrated unwavering loyalty and believed Spartacus held the key to his liberation. However, his perspective shifted dramatically when Spartacus dismissed the possibility of his freedom. Following a conversation with Illythia, Segovax was coerced into attempting to assassinate Spartacus, as she had requested. The assassination attempt failed, and even after suffering a horrific injury – the removal of his genitalia – he steadfastly refused to betray Illythia or reveal the truth about his motives. His loyalty to Illythia remained absolute.
To have his penis violently removed was already a terrible punishment, but his fellow gladiators went even further, crucifying him in the training grounds. The last thing he saw was the disappointed and furious face of Illythia, who left him to suffer a slow and agonizing death. Of all the deaths in the show, it would be extremely difficult to argue that this wasn’t not only one of the most brutal, but by far the most humiliating. However, in terms of pure shock value, it pales in comparison to a death that would occur 18 episodes later.
Sedullus Met His Fate at the Hands of Spartacus
Out of all the deaths that have occurred, none were directly caused by the series’ main hero. However, the death of Sedullus stands out as one of the character’s most impressive kills, and arguably the most brutally memorable moment across all four seasons. Sedullus appeared only once, in the seventh episode of Season 3, “Sacramentum.” His aggressive behavior sparked a chaotic fight between the Germanics and the rebels. He initially tried to kill Agron, but Spartacus intervened. In that brief clash, Spartacus delivered a shockingly effective finishing blow, slicing off Sedullus’ entire face with a single sword strike. The scene showed the opponent’s brain spilling out and falling to the ground.
I remember being totally floored by this moment – it was so much more dramatic and intense than almost any other death in the series, even for a show as wild as Spartacus. It always comes up first whenever fans discuss character deaths online, and for good reason! Even though there were still 13 episodes left after this, we all had a feeling nothing else could possibly be as shocking. And honestly, we were spot on. It really set a new standard.
