Jon Bernthal recently spoke with ScreenRant about The Punisher: One Last Kill, now available on Disney+. He explained that his character, Frank Castle, is trying to move forward and find a new direction. Bernthal hopes this change feels authentic, stating, “I hope so. That was definitely the intention, and I hope we’ve achieved it without being too obvious or heavy-handed.”
He realized that placing the gift from the little girl on his daughter’s grave was the first time he hadn’t left something taken from someone he’d harmed. He believes that by helping other families, seeking justice, and protecting others, he can truly honor his own family’s memory. This feels like a significant turning point for him.
Following the conclusion of The Punisher: One Last Kill, Jon Bernthal explained that, like his co-star Rei, his roles as a husband and father come first. He said this connection was the foundation of their working relationship on King Richard. Bernthal emphasized that he wouldn’t be able to portray Frank Castle authentically without truly understanding the depth of love and willingness to sacrifice everything for family.
As a fan, I always felt Frank Castle was a guy destined for darkness, and Jon Bernthal really gets that. He’s said Frank isn’t someone who’ll ever find peace or happiness, and isn’t even looking for it – he’s more about honoring the people he’s lost. But he also hinted to ScreenRant that this recent special might open up some new possibilities for Frank, and maybe even a path, though he’s keeping tight-lipped about what that looks like.
