Hayden Panettiere is clarifying a misunderstanding about her daughter’s custody arrangement before the release of her memoir. In a conversation with Jay Shetty on his podcast, On Purpose With Jay Shetty, she explained that she did not simply give up her child. Panettiere shared that while she was struggling with postpartum depression and addiction, she and Wladimir Klitschko, Kaya’s father, agreed to give him full custody. However, she emphasized that she’s remained an active and loving mother, maintaining a close relationship with Kaya. “I travel to see her as much as I can,” she said, adding that they share a strong and special bond for which she is thankful.
In her memoir, Hayden Panettiere describes how her struggles with addiction and mental health were reflected in her role on the TV show Nashville, making it harder to get better. Constant attention from the paparazzi only made things worse. She explained to Dr. Shetty that she was dealing with anxiety, postpartum depression, and the pressure of acting while feeling lost. Despite appearances, she actively sought treatment, saying, “I needed help desperately. I knew it might look bad, but I couldn’t continue living the way I was.”
After Hayden and Wladimir split up, our daughter Kaya started living part of the time in the US and part in Ukraine. When it came to getting her the support she needed, it just made sense for her to stay with her dad full-time. She had built such a great life there – family, friends, activities she loved. She was even learning the languages! By the time I was finally getting better myself, I realized it would have been wrong and honestly, selfish, to disrupt that life she’d created for herself.
Hayden Panettiere says her 11-year-old daughter is doing very well and spends time with her regularly. She describes her daughter as a bright and happy child who is fluent in five languages, enjoys horseback riding, and understands that both of her parents love her. Panettiere wants to clarify that reports she abandoned her daughter are false, stating that she has always been supportive.
