Even though there have been plenty of historical dramas and romances on TV in 2025, as a Netflix subscriber, there’s one show I’m bummed to be waiting for: Season 4 of Bridgerton. It takes a really long time to film and prepare this show for us fans, but we *do* know a good bit about the new season. Thankfully, Jonathan Bailey, who plays the amazing Anthony Bridgerton, will be back! He recently said filming felt like attending a debutante ball, and honestly, I totally see his point. It sounds like a whirlwind of activity and preparation, just like those events!
How Did Jonathan Bailey Compare Filming Bridgerton To A Real Debutante Ball?
Since starring in Season 2 of Bridgerton, Jonathan Bailey has become a well-known movie star. The actor, who also appears in Jurassic World: Rebirth, has several exciting projects on the horizon, including Wicked: For Good-where viewers might notice similarities between his character, Fiyero, and Anthony-and the next season of the popular show that launched his career. Although the premiere of Bridgerton Season 4 is still some time away, Bailey recently compared filming the show to attending a debutante ball, as he explained to Time:
It’s wonderful when, every few years, one of your siblings goes through this incredible creative journey – the chance to tell a beautiful love story. And then, with the boost from Netflix, it often feels like a strangely self-aware debutante ball – almost like watching a story about a debutante ball *while* it’s happening.
I hadn’t considered it this way before, but he’s absolutely correct, isn’t he? What’s great about this passionate romance is that it largely follows the story in the Bridgerton novels, centering each season on a different sibling finding love. Because of this, the show effectively gains new lead actors every couple of years, who then find themselves very much in the public eye during filming.
Even though I enjoy Bridgerton, I can still admire Jonathan Bailey’s funny and truthful perspective on the show’s depiction of love and relationships.
In addition to everything else, as Bailey pointed out, after filming wraps and the show is prepared for release, the new leads (Season 4 will center on Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha as Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek) then experience what’s known as “the Netflix effect”-a period of intense publicity lasting several months. This really functions as a grand introduction to the Hollywood scene, particularly for those new to the series, such as Ha.
It’s great that the show has experienced actors like Bailey who can offer support as the series continues. While he won’t be featured as prominently in the fourth season as some viewers might hope, he’ll still be there for his co-stars. I wouldn’t be surprised if we learn more about his contributions to the new episodes as the premiere date approaches, and I’m sure he’ll always be a valuable presence on set. It’s comforting to know he’s still involved.
