Netflix‘s returning crime series tracks down critical acclaim.
Crime thrillers continue to be popular on Netflix in 2026. Several original series, including His & Hers, Run Away, and Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, demonstrate the genre’s strength, offering viewers captivating mysteries, suspenseful plots, and complex characters. His & Hers was particularly successful, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched shows and raising the bar for other crime thrillers. Now, another genre is beginning to gain momentum on the platform, and it’s already showing promising results.
The second season of the Danish crime series, The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek, has received a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, based on the first five reviews. The season, titled Hide and Seek, premiered on Netflix on May 7th, with all six episodes available to stream. Although the score could change as more reviews come in, it’s a strong start for the series.
As a critic, I’m seeing a lot of parallels between the new season of The Chestnut Man, now titled Hide and Seek, and what we saw with its fantastic first outing. The original season was a critical darling – a perfect 100% score, and audiences really loved it too, giving it an 84% rating. While we don’t have audience scores for Hide and Seek just yet, I suspect they’ll be quite different. A particularly controversial plot point midway through the new season feels like it could significantly impact how viewers respond, potentially falling short of that initial, overwhelmingly positive reaction.
Early reviews for The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek are all positive. Joel Keller at Decider says the new season is just as creepy as the first, and also highlights the well-developed relationship between investigators Mark Hess and Naia Thulin, considering everything that happened in season one and the time that’s passed. Karina Adelgaard from Heaven of Horror recommends watching all six episodes at once.
My review of The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek for ScreenRant gave the second season of this Netflix crime thriller a 9/10 score. I particularly liked how the show built a strong connection between the detectives Hess and Thulin, and how it delivered a satisfying reveal and a thrilling final episode. The series is currently the 5th most popular show on Netflix globally, according to FlixPatrol, which suggests a bright future. However, Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed a third season of The Chestnut Man yet.
