It can take years for a TV show to become truly appreciated. Over fifty years after its original broadcast on ABC, the beloved series The Six Million Dollar Man is now gaining popularity on streaming services.
Recent data from FlixPatrol shows the 1973 science fiction action series is gaining popularity on the Apple TV Store. It’s currently the third most-downloaded TV show in the U.S., surpassing newer series like Landman and George & Mandy’s First Marriage. The show is also a hit in Canada, remaining in the Top 10 since May 6th.
The Six Million Dollar Man Was Ahead of Its Time
Lee Majors stars in The Six Million Dollar Man as Colonel Steve Austin, a pilot severely injured in an accident. A secret government agency rebuilds him using advanced, cybernetic implants, essentially making him a $6 million experiment. With his new bionic parts, he undertakes dangerous missions for the agency.
The popular science fiction show ran from 1973 to 1978, with additional TV movies released in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although it’s not as widely discussed today, many of the show’s ideas still appear in current films and TV shows. Steve Austin’s character, in particular, feels like a precursor to similar figures we see on screen today.
It’s not surprising this show is still popular nearly fifty years after it ended. While some of the jokes and special effects might seem a little dated now, many viewers find it remains surprisingly enjoyable. Its 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes proves it’s still worth watching even decades later.
Could The Six Million Dollar Man Ever Return?
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the “Six Million Dollar Man” on TV, but the character of Steve Austin remains popular. Several attempts have been made to revive the series with a new movie, but none have succeeded. The most recent plan involved casting and updating the title to The Six Billion Dollar Man to reflect current values. Warner Bros. currently owns the rights to the reboot, but there haven’t been any major developments on the project for quite some time.
Fans eager for more stories about Colonel Steve Austin can explore the many books and comics that expand on his adventures. Beyond the original TV series and movies, The Six Million Dollar Man has inspired a wealth of additional content. Even if the show doesn’t return, there’s still plenty to enjoy for those interested in the world of the Six Million Dollar Man.
The Six Million Dollar Man is available to buy or rent on the Apple TV Store.
