8 year old suspended for bringing tiny Lego gun to school after staff classify it as a “weapon”

A school in Georgia suspended an eight-year-old student for three days because a small LEGO creation he brought to school was considered a weapon by staff.

At Walnut Creek Elementary in McDonough, a student with autism and ADHD was sent out of class because of a toy he brought, according to his mother.

Chanti Little explained to reporters that the LEGO creation wasn’t a real gun and believed the punishment was too harsh considering her son’s medical conditions.

Little told 11Alive that her child didn’t cause any trouble at school or say anything inappropriate. She believes school officials could have simply explained to her child that building items resembling weapons, like guns, isn’t allowed.

The principal informed the mother that her son had brought a weapon to school, causing her to become very upset and frightened.

Henry County Schools gives principals the freedom to determine appropriate discipline, taking into account things like why the student acted, how serious the behavior was, and the student’s age. The school district’s guidelines categorize misbehavior into four levels, and administrators can choose between in-school or out-of-school suspension based on the specific situation.

Little stated she will request the school district provide details about the reasoning behind the decision and confirm if proper procedures were followed before her son’s suspension.

This situation echoes a case from Missouri earlier in 2024, where a student faced suspension after creating a makeshift gun from Dr Pepper cans and sharing photos of it with friends on Snapchat. The student then took legal action, filing a lawsuit against the school district.
