Ghost in the Shell anime gets new trailer, story details & July release date

I’m so excited! We finally have a release date for the new Ghost in the Shell anime! Science SARU just announced it’ll be hitting screens on July 7, 2026. I’ve been waiting ages for this cyberpunk show!

A new trailer dropped on May 11th, offering fans the most detailed preview yet of Motoko Kusanagi and her team in this futuristic setting.

The upcoming series is being animated by Science SARU, the acclaimed studio known for shows like Dandadan and Inu-Oh. It’s a fresh take on Masamune Shirow’s classic Ghost in the Shell manga.

Ghost in the Shell anime drops story details & trailer

The story takes place in Japan in 2029, a time when the world is highly connected through vast information networks, despite ongoing national and political boundaries.

The series, much like the original manga and the 1995 movie, centers on Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg whose entire body is artificial, and her work leading a highly skilled combat team. Motoko and her colleague Batou want to create a special unit that can tackle new cyber threats quickly, before they become major problems.

Meanwhile, Daisuke Aramaki, a member of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was building a team with similar goals. Once he recruited Major Kusanagi and her team, they began working as Section 9, a tactical unit specializing in offensive operations—also nicknamed the “Shell Squad.”

While investigating cybercrime and global conspiracies, the team faces off against the Puppet Master, a notorious and memorable villain from the series.

The newest trailer gave fans a better view of the anime’s art style, which looks like a rougher, more traditional manga. The trailer showed exciting action sequences and even featured the Tachikoma – the popular, spider-like AI tanks known for being both adorable and dangerous.

The third key visual for the TV anime Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex has been released. The series follows Section 9, a public security organization led by Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg with a fully prosthetic body.

The new Ghost in the Shell anime series is scheduled to debut on July 7, 2026. In the meantime, fans can admire a remarkably detailed, life-size figure of Motoko Kusanagi – though it comes with a hefty price tag of over $7,000.
