Screenwriter Ana Nogueira has given fans a sneak peek at what to anticipate from the DCU’s upcoming film, Supergirl. The revamped universe is getting off to a great start, with Superman receiving very positive feedback, along with shows like Creature Commandos and Season 2 of Peacemaker. Looking ahead to 2026, a variety of DC projects are planned, including Lanterns and Clayface, but Supergirl is definitely the most highly anticipated. As we saw in Superman, Milly Alcock’s portrayal of the character is quite different than what some viewers might be expecting.
In a conversation with Variety, Nogueira explained what attracted her to the Supergirl project. The article highlighted that although she doesn’t often read comic books, she’s a huge fan of superhero films, and that’s what first sparked her interest in the project and the broader DCU. She even shared that the character of Supergirl didn’t fully click for her until she read the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Nogueira talked about how the comic’s unique approach delved into Kara’s history, resulting in a “rougher and grittier, and edgier and funnier” take on the superhero.
She witnessed the total destruction of Krypton. I always struggled to understand portrayals of the character that were overly cheerful. When I read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, I immediately thought, ‘That’s the Supergirl I know.’
‘Supergirl’ Will Draw Heavily from ‘Woman of Tomorrow’
Warner Bros.
Originally, the Supergirl movie was going to be called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but the subtitle was later removed. The characters in the film, like Krem of the Yellow Hills and Ruthye Marye Knoll, suggest that Supergirl will closely follow a particular story arc, unlike most Superman films. However, Supergirl is making some significant changes to the Woman of Tomorrow storyline by adding Lobo (played by Jason Momoa), meaning it won’t be a direct adaptation.
Nogueira is now a central figure in shaping the DCU. She wrote the script for Supergirl and has also been commissioned to write the screenplays for both Wonder Woman and Teen Titans within the DCU. James Gunn was so impressed with her Supergirl script that he decided to make it the second film in the DCU, even though that wasn’t the initial intention. Gunn has hinted that another script is progressing well and will be revealed shortly, and it’s likely to be Nogueira’s Wonder Woman film, which Warner Bros. is eager to move forward with quickly.
Most audiences are familiar with Supergirl, especially after the popular six-season series Supergirl on The CW, starring Melissa Benoist. However, the Supergirl we’ll see in the DCU will be quite different, as hinted at by the ending of Superman. This fresh take on the character is promising, potentially setting Kara Zor-El apart from her well-known cousin and appealing to a new audience. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav has indicated that Supergirl is a key character in the DCU – alongside Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – making it clear she’ll have a significant part to play in the future of the franchise.
