22 Years Ago, South Park Predicted AI Slop

Right now, the biggest danger to the film and TV industry is generative A.I. While streaming and the pandemic were serious problems, they mainly threatened movie theaters – we’d still get movies and shows, just at home. But if A.I. becomes commonplace, it could destroy the heart of filmmaking. It risks replacing creativity and genuine storytelling with shallow, forgettable content.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, are among the few in Hollywood actively experimenting with artificial intelligence. However, they’re focused on using AI to enhance their existing creative process, rather than letting it generate entirely new content. A recent episode of South Park showcased this approach with a remarkably realistic AI-generated deepfake of Donald Trump wandering the desert and engaging in bizarre behavior. It’s a bold and arguably perfect example of how AI can be used creatively.

Similar to The Simpsons, South Park has a knack for predicting the future. It famously foresaw the popularity of Pokémon Go, the legalization of marijuana, and the path Miley Cyrus’s career would take. Interestingly, it also hinted that Hollywood studios, always eager to make money, would quickly embrace AI tools that can generate movie ideas.

South Park’s Iconic 2004 Episode “Awesom-O” Predicted Hollywood Studios Using AI To Make Movies

The South Park episode “Awesom-O” (season 8, episode 5) is widely considered one of the show’s best. The episode starts with a funny idea and runs with it for the entire half hour. When Butters discovers a video of Cartman doing something embarrassing, Cartman has to pretend to be a robot named Awesom-O. He does this to prevent Butters from revealing the video to the whole class and exposing his prank.

Butters introduces his new robot companion, Awesom-O, to his family in Los Angeles. When some Hollywood producers see Awesom-O, they wonder if they can use him to create blockbuster movies. They decide to ask Cartman for a surefire movie idea – one that will definitely earn over $100 million.

Cartman starts churning out dozens of derivative movie ideas cobbled together from existing tropes and plot formulas that he’s seen elsewhere, just like ChatGPT would if you gave it the same prompt. The diminishing returns of Awesom-O’s movie ideas highlight the problem with using A.I. for creativity. It doesn’t necessarily come up with good ideas; it just comes up with a lot of ideas.

Cartman Comes Up With Much Better Movie Ideas Than ChatGPT

Cartman often comes up with movie ideas that aren’t particularly unique, but a few of them are actually decent. He frequently features Adam Sandler – known for silly, lighthearted comedies – as the main character. Some ideas are awful, like a romance between Adam Sandler and a dog, but others, such as Sandler being stranded with a coconut he falls for, could be surprisingly entertaining.

A new movie idea starring Adam Sandler involves him needing to win a boxing match to claim a $1 million inheritance. There’s potential for a great cast, with Kevin James as his boxing opponent, and Steve Buscemi or Henry Winkler as his trainer. Chris Rock could play a flamboyant boxing promoter in the style of Don King. Even when South Park intentionally tries to be unoriginal, it still manages to be clever – this concept sounds more promising than many movies starring Rob Schneider.
