I think Alan Ritchson is really breaking out this year, and his new film, Motor City, is shaping up to be a truly different kind of action thriller. However, a movie from last year proved just how difficult the core idea of Motor City is to get right. Honestly, 2026 feels like the year Ritchson is finally making a serious run at becoming a leading man, and so far, it’s looking good.
Kaley Ritchson’s action film War Machine was popular on Netflix, and a follow-up is already being discussed. This success follows his previous streaming hit, Playdate, on Prime Video. Later in 2026, Ritchson will star in the thriller Runner, playing a courier in a high-stakes race against time to deliver a life-saving liver to a sick girl, all while being pursued by dangerous mercenaries.
Although it’s not official, Alan Ritchson’s new movie, The Man with the Bag, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Santa Claus, is expected to be released around the end of the year. With season four of Reacher also coming up, plus a role in the Neagley spin-off, Ritchson is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand actors working today.
The trailer for Jack Reacher star Alan Ritchson’s new film, Motor City, dropped this week, confirming the buzz around the project. Set in the 1970s, this action thriller follows John, played by Ritchson, who seeks revenge after being wrongly imprisoned for years by a gangster (Ben Foster). After his release, he’s determined to get payback and reunite with the woman he loves, played by Shailene Woodley.
The trailer for Motor City is getting a lot of attention, and it feels like a return to classic revenge films. Interestingly, the preview contains only one line of spoken dialogue.
Motor City Will Have (Almost) No Dialogue
I’ve heard the movie Motor City is almost completely silent – apparently, there are only about five lines of dialogue throughout the whole thing! It really relies on the visuals and the actors to tell the story. That was the main thing that got people excited about the script way back in 2009, and a lot of big stars were considered for it over the years.
Several actors, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Evans, and Gerard Butler, were considered for the main role at various points. Surprisingly, the unique concept that initially attracted people to the project often became the reason they backed out as production neared, causing difficulties.
John Woo’s Silent Night Proved Motor City Gimmick Is Hard To Pull Off
I’ve always loved action movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Raid – they prove you don’t need tons of talking to create something truly exciting. But Silent Night, John Woo’s 2023 return to directing action – the same John Woo who gave us classics like Hard Boiled and Face/Off – takes things to another level. It barely has any dialogue at all, and honestly, it really highlights just how different that is from most action films.
Silent Night is a revenge thriller where Joel Kinnaman plays a father who’s lost his son and seeks vengeance on those responsible, despite being unable to speak himself. Remarkably, the entire film unfolds without any spoken dialogue, pushing director Woo to develop creative storytelling techniques.
Even with Woo’s skills as a director, the movie Silent Night doesn’t quite succeed. The biggest issue is its almost complete lack of dialogue, which the story never really explains. The first half of the film is slow and overly dramatic, but Woo manages to create some exciting action sequences in the latter half.
While the action sequences are decent, they don’t quite reach the level of John Woo’s best films, either from Hong Kong or his American work like Hard Target. Joel Kinnaman does a great job with a physically demanding role, despite having no dialogue, but that doesn’t explain why Silent Night wasn’t well-received by critics or at the box office.
Motor City Can Succeed Where Silent Night Failed
Just because Silent Night didn’t succeed with a movie without dialogue doesn’t mean Motor City will fail too. Initial reactions to Motor City have been very positive, with people especially enjoying the acting and action sequences. It’s possible the filmmakers learned from Silent Night‘s experience and made different choices for their film.
Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about Motor City, and if the early word is true, it could be the best action movie we’ve seen from Ritchson yet. Honestly, the trailers alone are grabbing my attention – it looks like his most visually impressive work so far. And I’m really hoping it delivers; it’s great to see him in a throwback, hard-R action film made for the big screen experience.
