The town of Oakdale, Georgia has decided to bring back its entire police department, just two days after the mayor unexpectedly fired all the officers and disbanded the force.
Okay, so things got pretty crazy in Cohutta recently. The mayor, Ron Shinnick, suddenly fired all of the police officers! Can you believe it? It caused a huge uproar, and the town had to rely on the county sheriff for protection while they figured things out. They even had an emergency vote because everyone was so upset about it.
Council says mayor violated town charter
The Cohutta Town Council voted at a meeting on May 8th to immediately bring back all of its officers and give them the pay they missed, as reported by the Associated Press.
The council also approved a rule that blocks Mayor Shinnick from firing those officers for another 30 days.
The employees were reportedly fired after a growing conflict involving the mayor’s wife, Pam Shinnick, who used to be the town clerk.
Local news station WDEF reports that problems had been growing for weeks regarding Pam Shinnick, the mayor’s wife and a former town clerk. Police officers claimed she continued to have access to town computer systems and payroll details even after leaving her job.

Mayor Shinnick stated he disbanded the department because officers reportedly made improper remarks about his wife on social media.
Former Sgt. Jeremy May disputed that explanation in comments made to WRCB-TV.
May stated she firmly believes the situation stems from a personal grudge held by the mayor. She explained that after they advocated for openness and accountability, all those involved were fired.
Town attorney Bryan Rayburn informed the council that the recent layoffs broke town rules, specifically a requirement for 30 days’ notice before anyone can be suspended or let go.
