Even earlier in the series, episodes were filled with moments where things could have gone very differently, creating intense suspense – like Ned Stark’s death and the unexpected loss of a beloved character that even surprised those who hadn’t read the books.

Khal Drogo’s drawn-out death is a prime example of Mirri Maz Duur acting with ‘malicious compliance,’ and it marked a significant shift in the show’s direction. While Jason Momoa’s performance made Drogo a memorable figure, the character had the potential to be even more impactful. Had he survived – considering he led what was presented as the most powerful army – Game of Thrones could have been a very different show, and potentially concluded after just three seasons.

Had the Dothraki been as formidable as legends claimed, the squabbling kingdoms of Westeros would have been forced to unite against Drogo. If he’d survived, his arrival by ship would have been a dramatic conclusion to the first season, setting up a second season filled with urgent alliances and warfare. This would have positioned Drogo, or the Night King, as the central conflict for season three. Given Westeros’ diverse landscapes, varying military strengths, and different weaponry, the Dothraki likely would have been defeated, allowing a unified Westeros to then confront the Night King.

The Lannisters didn’t see Daenerys Targaryen as a serious threat until she had dragons. Had her husband, Drogo, survived, they probably would have been correct – she would have remained a minor player. Even if Drogo’s army had won against the Seven Kingdoms, the show demonstrated that the Dothraki wouldn’t have been able to defeat the Night King, meaning winter would still have won. Despite this potentially darker outcome, Drogo living could have made Game of Thrones more surprising by altering a key character’s destiny.

Drogo’s Survival Would Have Turned A Predictable Character Into A Wild Card

While many of the most compelling characters in Game of Thrones are complex and hard to pin down, Jon Snow stands out as a more traditional hero, embodying the honorable values of his father, Ned Stark, despite secretly being a Targaryen. He’s brave, does what he believes is right, and avoids scheming. Though these qualities make him a classic fantasy figure, they don’t make him as captivating as characters like Cersei. If Drogo had lived, it could have shaken things up for Jon, adding unpredictability to his story.

I always figured that even while they were trying to defeat the Night King, Sam would stumble upon the truth about Jon’s heritage. Even knowing he’s both a Targaryen and a Stark, I thought Jon might still refuse the throne like he did in the show. But it’s also possible things could have been different, and he’d have been forced into a power struggle with Daenerys. Jon never wanted power; he only took it on when he felt cornered. With the Dothraki closing in, I could see that happening again, forcing his hand.

Jon never truly wanted to be a leader, and his feelings of being a bastard often motivated him. However, if Daenerys Targaryen had arrived earlier, his path could have been very different. With Ned Stark’s guidance and his connection to House Stark, Jon might have become a stronger, more secure ruler. Even if he hadn’t sought power, a significant conflict between the Targaryens, fueled by deep personal emotions, would have been a memorable battle in Game of Thrones, regardless of whether dragons were involved.
