A German tourist successfully sued a travel agent because his family couldn’t find available sun loungers during their vacation.
I think when people picture a vacation, they either want to really see a place – you know, hike around, experience the local culture – or they just want to totally relax and do nothing but chill by the pool. It’s one of those two extremes for me, honestly!
Choosing to do things this way can sometimes cause problems. Many vacationers rush to claim the best pool chairs early in the morning, which often bothers other guests.
A German tourist recently took a travel company to court because he couldn’t get a sunbed, setting a new legal precedent. Although some resorts and countries have tried to address this issue, this case marks a novel approach.
German tourist wins sunlounger lawsuit
According to the BBC, a man is suing his tour operator because they let guests reserve sun loungers, despite a rule at the Greek resort prohibiting the practice of saving spots with towels.
The man was upset because there weren’t enough sun loungers, and his children had to lie on the floor. He had already tried for 20 minutes, getting up at 6 am, to find an available one.
He first received a refund of €350 (about £302 or $411), but a court in Hanover, Germany, decided he deserved a larger amount. Ultimately, he received a total of €986.70 (roughly £852.89 or $1160.98), according to the BBC.

Although the judges acknowledged the tour operator wasn’t responsible for managing the hotel itself, they determined the company was expected to ensure there were enough sun loungers for the number of guests and to stop unauthorized reservations.
Unlike Faycal Manz, who sued Los Tacos No. 1 in New York for $100,000 after claiming the food was too spicy and caused him days of diarrhea (resulting in his case being dismissed), this individual had a more successful outcome.
