Eric Kripke, the creator of ‘The Boys,’ has pushed back against criticism that Season 5 includes unnecessary episodes, suggesting that viewers making those claims might be misunderstanding the show’s overall purpose.
The Boys has taken the superhero genre to new heights since launching on Prime Video in 2019.
Over five seasons, this show has cleverly poked fun at superhero movies and TV, all while telling a gripping story about the dangers of unchecked power.
Erik Kripke, the creator of ‘The Boys,’ has responded to fan concerns about the show’s latest episodes, as the series is set to end on May 20, 2026.
The Boys creator says people complaining about filler are “watching the wrong show”

With the end of ‘The Boys’ approaching, recent episodes have been more focused on the characters themselves and their personal stories. This shift away from big action sequences and visual effects hasn’t pleased all viewers.
I was reading an interview with Kripke, and he really stood his ground on something. He told TV Guide that all the big stuff happening at the end of the season wouldn’t mean anything if we didn’t really know the characters first. It’s a good point, honestly – you need that emotional connection!
I’m seeing a lot of negative feedback online, honestly. People seem to want massive action sequences every episode, and I’m wondering what they’re expecting. Not only can I not afford those kinds of scenes, but they’d also be pointless and boring – just a lot of movement without any real meaning.
Kripke highlights recent episodes as focusing on developing the dynamic between Homelander and Soldier Boy, resolving the storyline involving Friecracker, and clarifying the motivations behind characters’ alliances with Hughie or Butcher.
He points out that the most impactful moments have been about developing the characters, but some viewers seem to think nothing significant happens if it’s not a dramatic plot twist. He disagrees, saying huge developments did occur, just not in the form of typical action-packed scenes. He believes if viewers are looking for that kind of spectacle, they’re watching the wrong series.
Erik Kripke blames anger on weekly release schedule

Kripke thinks fans might not have been as upset if all the episodes from Season 5 had been released at the same time, allowing them to watch the whole season consecutively.
The showrunner believes the weekly release schedule may be causing some frustration. While they enjoy it because it allows viewers to discuss and debate each episode, they suspect watching the whole series at once would be a different experience. The wait between weekly episodes might feel slow or drag on, and that delay likely bothers some viewers.
I support this release schedule, but I was just curious if it might be causing that particular issue.
The final episode of The Boys will air on May 20, 2026. You can find our ranking of all seasons and related shows here.
