As a huge retro gaming fan, I think the Super Nintendo is easily one of the best consoles ever made – it really shows Nintendo at their absolute best! Sure, not every game holds up perfectly today, but so many of the classics are still amazing. Games like Chrono Trigger and the whole Donkey Kong Country series are some of Nintendo’s most incredible accomplishments, in my opinion.
Even without considering fond memories, these games are truly exceptional, boasting incredible design and graphics that still hold up well today. They remain as enjoyable now as they were back in the ’90s, and some are even more fun to experience.
Super Mario RPG Redefined a Nintendo Icon
I’ve always loved RPGs, but honestly, you didn’t really expect to see a Super Mario game playing in that space, right? Super Mario RPG was a total surprise! It basically took the Final Fantasy style of gameplay and completely reimagined it with Mario characters. It was a huge gamble – changing things up so much and adding brand new characters could have easily ruined it, but somehow, it totally worked!
Super Mario RPG is a truly special game – it’s considered one of the best Mario titles and one of the best role-playing games on the Super Nintendo. It’s remained popular for years, even receiving a recent remake for the Nintendo Switch, but the original version is still a beloved classic.
ActRaiser Was Way Ahead of Its Time
Many popular video games succeed by boldly combining different types of gameplay. A great example is ActRaiser on the Super Nintendo, which uniquely mixes city-building simulation with fast-paced action platforming, all within a larger concept of playing as a god.

While the Mega Man series isn’t limited to Nintendo consoles, it first became popular on those systems. After Mega Man 7 was a hit on the Super Nintendo, three Mega Man X games were released. The series then expanded to include the PlayStation and Sega Saturn.
The three Mega Man X games for the SNES are all great, though the second and third ones become increasingly complex. The original Mega Man X strikes a perfect balance between fast-paced action and challenging platforming, offering a fresh take compared to previous Mega Man titles. Even now, Mega Man X is considered a landmark 2D action game.
Final Fantasy VI Is One of the Best JRPGs of the ’90s
The Final Fantasy series from Square Enix is legendary in the role-playing game world, and Final Fantasy VI was the last installment released for the Super Nintendo. It’s the final main Final Fantasy game to use 2D graphics. While Final Fantasy VII marked a big change, Final Fantasy VI remains one of the most complex and rewarding games on the SNES.

Square made some truly excellent RPGs for the Super Nintendo, and their Final Fantasy games are often considered the best. However, many fans believe Chrono Trigger is actually Square’s greatest achievement on the console. Despite dealing with the complicated topic of time travel, Chrono Trigger remains a remarkably well-paced and enjoyable game.
At its heart, Chrono Trigger is known for its clever and intricate story, featuring seven characters you can play as and over a dozen different endings to discover. Having so many endings was unusual for games on the Super Nintendo, and it really highlights how ambitious Chrono Trigger was.
Kirby Super Star Is Packed With Great Games
As a huge Kirby fan, I’ve played the series on tons of different Nintendo consoles, and the Super Nintendo games are some of the best! But if I had to pick just one to recommend, it would absolutely be Kirby Super Star. It’s not like the other Kirby games at all – instead of one long adventure, it’s actually eight games in one! You get seven totally different experiences, plus two fun little minigames, which is way more variety than you usually get in a Kirby title.
This method really highlights how versatile Kirby is, and taking that chance was a smart move. A remastered version, Kirby Super Star Ultra, came out for the Nintendo DS later on, but the original game is still enjoyable today. It’s easy to see why it’s now available on Nintendo Switch Online.
Star Fox Brought 3D to the Super Nintendo
Star Fox is a major Nintendo franchise, though it often gets less spotlight than series like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. From the start, the games have generally followed a similar pattern, using a distinctive style of on-rails shooting gameplay.
What really makes Star Fox stand out is its use of 3D graphics. It achieved this unique look by using special technology called the Super FX chip, which allowed the Super Nintendo to do things it wasn’t normally capable of. While only a few SNES games used this technology, Star Fox is the most well-known and impressive example.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island Is the Best SNES Game
The original Super Mario World was a fantastic launch title for the SNES, significantly improving upon Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. It revolutionized 2D platforming, and remarkably, its sequel manages to be even more impressive.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is known for its introduction of Baby Mario and the innovative gameplay of controlling Yoshi. While it takes some getting used to, the game stands out because it didn’t just copy existing formulas. Instead, it created a fresh and exciting style of platformer that remains fun to play even now.
