10 Years Later, Star Wars’ New Show Answers A Major Sith Lord Mystery About Darth Vader

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 9-10

A single line of dialogue spoken by Maul in Star Wars Rebels sparked years of debate about Darth Vader’s past during a dark period in the galaxy. Now, the Star Wars franchise has delivered a definitive answer, creating a truly impactful and rewarding moment for fans of the animated series.

The new series, Maul – Shadow Lord, follows Darth Maul as he tries to regain his strength in the galaxy’s criminal world. He’s also looking for someone to teach the ways of the dark side. Both of these efforts are driven by his desire to get revenge on Darth Sidious, who once betrayed, tortured, and abandoned Maul after the events of The Phantom Menace.

While Star Wars Rebels primarily showed Maul seeking revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi, the show almost included a fight between him and Darth Vader, who was Emperor Palpatine’s apprentice at the time. Now, the ending of Shadow Lord finally explains a long-standing mystery about Vader and Maul that started ten years ago in season two of Star Wars Rebels.

10 Years Ago, Maul Claimed He Couldn’t Defeat Darth Vader in Star Wars Rebels

In season 2 of Star Wars Rebels, and particularly its finale in 2016, the former Sith Lord Maul made his first appearance, briefly teaming up with Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, and Ahsoka Tano on the planet Malachor – a standout story arc in the show. Maul was also determined to make Ezra his new apprentice, a goal he pursued in later episodes of Rebels until his final confrontation and death at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine.

Following several fights with Inquisitors on Malachor, Maul emphasized the importance of continuing their alliance, stating he couldn’t defeat Darth Vader on his own. This admission was particularly striking, and it led many fans to speculate that Maul had previously attempted to fight Vader and lost, earlier in the Star Wars saga.

This idea went unproven for years, but recent episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord – and the truly frightening introduction of Darth Vader – have finally confirmed it. The series is widely considered one of the best animated Star Wars stories ever made.

Now, Vader’s Shadow Lord Appearance Confirms Maul Was Speaking From Personal Experience

As predicted, episodes nine and ten of Maul – Shadow Lord feature a fierce battle between Maul and Darth Vader, taking place long before the events of Rebels. This fight convincingly explains why Maul later seeks out allies on Malachor.

Despite help from surviving Jedi like Devon Izara and Master Daki, the three of them are overwhelmed by Darth Vader’s constant attacks. Each strike demonstrates the immense power and rage of the dark side, with Vader at the height of his abilities. The intense fight ends tragically with Vader killing Master Daki, and Maul and Devon narrowly escaping with their lives from the Dark Lord and his Inquisitors.

However, this development led to Maul taking on Devon as his new apprentice. Driven by her sorrow and anger over Daki’s death, she sought training in the dark side during season 2 of Shadow Lord.

Re-watching Rebels, the duel in the new Shadow Lord episode really solidified something for me. It makes total sense why Maul was so insistent on having allies and keeping the peace with Ezra, Kanan, and Ahsoka when facing Vader on Malachor. He’d clearly fought Vader before and knew exactly how dangerous he was – he’d seen what Vader could do firsthand! It all clicks now.

In the end, only Ezra and Ahsoka confront Darth Vader on Malachor, making the “Shadow Lord” arc the first and only officially recognized instance of Maul and Vader battling each other – at least for now. It’s likely this won’t be their last fight, and Maul and his new apprentice Devon might challenge Vader again after she receives more training. We don’t know what happened to Devon before the events of Rebels; she probably either died or left Maul, which would explain why he began training Ezra instead.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m thrilled to share that all episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are now available to stream on Disney+! It’s from Lucasfilm Animation, so you know it’s going to be great.
