Twitch stream leads to massive fine for NBA Star Jaylen Brown after rant about refs

The NBA has fined Boston Celtics player Jaylen Brown $50,000 for comments he made on his Twitch stream, where he suggested some referees were biased.

In recent years, more and more athletes and celebrities have started using Twitch. Some enjoy playing video games and sharing a different side of themselves, while others simply use the platform to connect and chat with their fans.

Jaylen Brown, a star player for the Boston Celtics, has been streaming frequently lately and has gained over 61,000 followers on the platform Twitch, which is owned by Amazon.

On May 4th, he faced criticism after complaining about the NBA referees during a Twitch stream with fans, following Boston’s playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Jaylen Brown’s Twitch stream lands him $50k fine

Brown, age 29, reviewed several moments from the game, pointing out a play where he believed Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George committed a foul by pushing off his defender. He argued that the referee should have called a foul on the play.

Brown argued that the referees were inconsistent with their calls, specifically regarding pushing. He felt they wouldn’t have called the same move on another player, but would quickly call it on him, adding that he believes officials have been unfairly targeting him all season.

He believes there’s a clear bias at play, pointing to recent officiating decisions. He stated that certain referees warrant investigation, noting that three questionable calls have occurred in the last three games.

As a result, the Celtics star was fined $50,000 by the NBA. 

Brown criticized 76ers player Joel Embiid, calling him a “flopper” even though he considers Embiid to be one of the greatest centers ever to play the game.

He’s been fined for criticizing referees before. ESPN reports that the 29-year-old received a $35,000 fine in January following a Celtics loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

In April, baseball player Blake Snell faced criticism after he responded to fans questioning the validity of his injuries during a Twitch stream.
