Steam Deck turned into a Nintendo DS-style “Flip Deck” by modder

A Steam Deck fan has transformed the handheld gaming console into something resembling a Nintendo DS, affectionately calling it the “Flip Deck.” This modification gives the Steam Deck a retro feel.

It’s common for people to modify their gaming consoles, like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. Players often customize these devices – for example, by adding apps like YouTube to a Switch or attaching a keyboard to a Steam Deck – to enhance their gaming experience and make the console their own.

Someone really went above and beyond, building a completely new game console called the Flip Deck – and it’s both amazing and incredibly creative.

Flip Deck brings the DS style to Steam Decks

I stumbled across something really cool on Reddit – this gamer built their own handheld console! They’re calling it the Flip Deck, and it looks amazing. Imagine a Steam Deck, but shaped like an old DS with a bright pink folding screen. It’s got joysticks, touchpads, and runs all the Steam Deck software. Seriously, it’s a really neat project!

Flip Deck anyone? Valve, I need a new cool job! 🤣

The creator playfully said their Steam Deck ‘flipped out’ – and they meant it as a compliment! They were showing off a modified version they call the ‘Flip Deck’.

They confirmed it was a genuine, fully working Steam Deck – every component, from the light sensor to the back buttons, was in perfect order. The only issue was the original thumbsticks, which they fixed by creating custom circuit boards for those and the face buttons.

It’s a bit smaller than the first console design – 4mm narrower and 100mm shorter. However, it’s still quite large and heavy, and won’t fit in your pocket like many older handheld gaming devices.

Fans immediately loved the invention, with many asking where they could buy one. One person wrote, “That is incredibly cool… When do you start shipping these?” The creator replied that they weren’t planning to sell them right now, but would consider making them available if there was enough demand.
