Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 8
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again has ended with a spectacular finale, wrapping up Mayor Fisk’s battle against vigilantes in New York City. Beyond the main story, the season is packed with hidden details, connections to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, surprise appearances, and enjoyable references to the original Netflix Marvel series where the conflict between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk began.
The season finale of Daredevil: Born Again delivers a satisfying payoff while also building excitement for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The conflict between Daredevil and the mayor of New York reaches a peak, and the episode is packed with exciting action and significant consequences. Importantly, the new series clearly pays tribute to the original Daredevil series from Netflix, and this is especially evident in the finale.
The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again is full of subtle details and hidden references. A close rewatch reveals nods to the earlier Daredevil series on Netflix, as well as connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s a rundown of the biggest Easter eggs, cameos, and hidden details we spotted in the season 2 finale.
The Southern Cross
The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, titled “The Southern Cross,” mirrors the season’s first episode, “The Northern Star.” The name is a nod to the four bright stars used for navigation and finding south – a fitting connection considering the initial episode’s reference to the north.
Panna II Garden Indian Restaurant
The restaurant featured in the scene with the string lights – the same one Karen and Matt visit in the Netflix series Daredevil – is a real place! It’s called Panna II Garden Indian Restaurant and it’s located in New York City’s East Village.
An Impostor Bullseye
Mayor Fisk orchestrated a plan to make it appear as though Poindexter was responsible for an attack, hoping to regain public support for his Safer Streets Act and his crackdown on vigilantes. He did this by having one of his men disguise themselves as Bullseye. However, the real Bullseye unexpectedly intervened and defeated the impostor, having remained in town after fulfilling Daredevil’s earlier request to protect the governor.
It’s quite ironic that Bullseye defeated someone pretending to be him, especially considering his past. In Daredevil season 3, Bullseye famously disguised himself as Daredevil at the behest of Kingpin, with the intention of ruining Daredevil’s reputation and turning people against him.
Recently, a Daredevil comic storyline featured Bullseye and several of his clones terrorizing New York City. They randomly shot people from rooftops, causing a city-wide lockdown that lasted for more than a week.
“When I Was A Boy…”
Wilson Fisk took the stand on the second day of Karen Page’s trial and began his testimony with a familiar phrase: “When I was a boy…” This opening line has become a trademark for the character, dating back to his first appearance in the Netflix series Daredevil in 2013.
“I Am Daredevil”
Matt Murdock dramatically revealed himself as Daredevil to the whole city, securing his win in court through this surprising act. This bold reveal echoes Tony Stark’s famous confession as Iron Man in the first Marvel movie, and it opens the door for Matt to potentially wear his iconic “I’m Not Daredevil” sweater, just like in the comics – a hope many fans share.
Cole North’s Redemption
Cole North decided to go against Officer Powell’s instructions and break away from working for Fisk, abandoning his life as one of the villain’s dangerous enforcers. This act marks the beginning of his attempt to make amends, much like his storyline in the comics where he initially worked for Fisk, tracking down vigilantes, before ultimately becoming an ally of Daredevil.
It remains to be seen if North will team up with Daredevil (Charlie Cox) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we’ll find out more as details about Daredevil season 3 are revealed in the months ahead.
Shelia Serves The Mayor’s Office (Not Fisk)
Okay, so in the Daredevil: Born Again finale, it’s finally clear where Shelia’s loyalties lie – it’s not with Fisk at all, but with actually running the city! It all makes sense now why she’s positioned to become the next mayor of New York. They’ve been hinting at this for a while, both within the season itself and even in the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Remember that shot of her handing Spider-Man the key to the city? That pretty much confirmed Fisk was on his way out of office long before the season even ended!
Hallways To The Max
After Karen’s trial, Daredevil’s movement gains significant momentum, attracting many supporters who rally alongside him and his friends. This ultimately leads to a large crowd marching on the courthouse, determined to take down Fisk themselves.
The season finale features two intense hallway fights, reminiscent of the classic Daredevil scenes from the Netflix series. In one, Wilson Fisk violently attacks his own people, many of whom are wearing red and homemade Daredevil masks in support of the hero. Simultaneously, Daredevil, along with Karen, Jessica Jones, and White Tiger, battle Fisk’s remaining security forces in a parallel hallway.
Grace & Mercy (Daredevil’s Core)
Instead of allowing the group to continue attacking Fisk, Daredevil intervened and stopped them. He surprisingly showed Kingpin a great deal of compassion, even though they were longtime enemies.
This is a truly impactful scene, reminding us of what makes Matt Murdock a hero: his unwavering belief in the good within everyone, and the possibility of redemption, even for those who seem lost. It strongly reflects his Catholic faith, as seen in the comics, and echoes the compassion his friend Foggy Nelson showed throughout his life.
Alias Investigations
After her fight with Fisk, Jessica Jones found herself back at Alias Investigations, the apartment and office she used in her original Netflix series. Since she now lives in the suburbs with her daughter, her return and recent partnership with Daredevil suggest she might be considering getting back into private investigation and hero work.
