Look, as a gamer, I’m usually pretty skeptical when I hear about a movie based on one of my favorite games. And honestly, that’s totally understandable. There’s a long track record of these adaptations just… not being good. So many times we’ve all gone to the theater excited, only to end up disappointed. It’s hard to get hyped when you’re expecting another letdown.
Even though some recent game adaptations like the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the new Silent Hill film got pretty mixed reactions, I’m still optimistic. It seems like Hollywood is finally starting to invest more serious money and effort into making video game movies, which is awesome! I’m hoping we’ll finally get some really great ones.
With movies like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and The Last of Us doing well, there’s growing optimism that the new Street Fighter film could finally succeed where other video game adaptations haven’t. Here’s a look at why.
7. The Main Cast
Proper Rising Stars Brought To The Fore

When a video game is adapted into a movie or show, the casting choices are almost always the first thing fans criticize. Luckily, with Street Fighter, the visual design of the characters is a major part of what people expect. While characters like Ken, Ryu, and Chun-Li have iconic appearances, the games themselves don’t usually focus much on developing their personalities beyond their roles as fighters.
The new Street Fighter movie wasn’t limited by needing to please established stars. The actors they chose – Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, and Callina Liang – aren’t yet household names. While Centineo is known from his work on Netflix, Koji and Liang haven’t had roles of this size before. This suggests the filmmakers prioritized finding the best actors for the parts, instead of simply casting the most famous ones.
6. The Ensemble Casting
WWE Stars Fit The Perfect Tone
Street Fighter aims to capture the energy of a real fight, and the filmmakers are building a strong supporting cast to achieve that. They’ve brought in actors like 50 Cent and Jason Momoa for roles beyond the main characters, and even cast professional wrestlers to help create the authentic fighter vibe they’re looking for.
Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns are both top stars in WWE and currently hold world championships. They headlined WrestleMania this year and are known worldwide as major wrestling figures. They’ll both appear in an upcoming film, with Rhodes playing Guile and Reigns as Akuma, bringing their star power and action experience to the roles.
WWE is known for not taking itself too seriously, and a successful Street Fighter movie will need to embrace a similar lighthearted approach. As a big WWE fan, I’m even more excited about this film now that they’ve cast WWE stars!
5. The Genre
Action-Comedy Is A Huge Sign
Adapting video games into movies has historically been difficult. Fans often criticize these films for being overly serious and silly, and they usually have a point. Even serious games can benefit from some humor when brought to the big screen, although ‘The Last of Us’ is a recent example that successfully broke this pattern.
I generally have more fun with movies, especially those adapted from video games, when they don’t try to be overly dramatic. This is particularly true for fighting games, which often have trouble building compelling stories around their characters and simple storylines.
The new Street Fighter movie is promising a comedic take on the classic game, which is great news for fans. We’re hoping for the exciting fights and powerful moments we remember, but also some funny scenes in between. The trailer already shows a fun dynamic between Ken and Ryu, suggesting there will be plenty of laughs.
Cammy playfully teasing Chun-Li about her legs being less muscular than expected was a clever way to highlight how unrealistic the body types are for many characters in Street Fighter, and it was a welcome bit of self-awareness.
4. The Setting
Better To Remain In The 90s
People naturally enjoy looking back at the past, and that’s a big reason why video game movies are so popular. The new Street Fighter movie leans into this by taking place in 1993. This setting not only fits the game’s fighting style and look, but also reminds audiences of when Street Fighter was a huge cultural phenomenon.
1993 was a peak year for the Street Fighter franchise, coinciding with the release of Super Street Fighter II. While the games have always been popular, this setting really captures the height of fan excitement. I became a big Street Fighter fan later on, but that’s just because I wasn’t around back then!
3. Eric Andre & Kitao Sakurai
A Proven Collaboration
What’s interesting about the new Street Fighter movie is its director, Kitao Sakurai. He’s relatively new to directing feature films, having only made two before this one. He’s best known for his work with comedian Eric Andre – he’s directed a lot of Andre’s comedy, and Andre is even in the Street Fighter film as the announcer, Don Sauvage. Their past projects together, like The Eric Andre Show and the film Bad Trip, have been popular with audiences.
Kitao Sakurai also directed episodes of the popular TV show Twisted Metal, which, like LEGO Masters, successfully turned games with minimal storylines into story-driven content. Given the show’s energetic, comedic style and Sakurai’s previous successful work with Andre, their new, larger-scale project has a lot of potential to be fantastic.
2. The Tournament Is The Plot
Sticking To The Story We Want
The 1994 Street Fighter movie is remembered as one of the first big-screen video game adaptations to flop. While it featured stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, most people agree it wasn’t a success. A major issue was the storyline, which centered on a simple action plot instead of the fighting tournament fans expected.
The latest Street Fighter movie is a step up, featuring a complete tournament where the world’s top fighters compete. Just as Eric Andre’s character states in the trailer, the film delivers on the promise of determining a single world champion of street fighting.
We’re much more thrilled by the idea of these fighters competing in a tournament setting than by a typical action movie with these characters. The classic rivalry between Ken and Ryu is a key part of the story, and there’s a hint of a conspiracy surrounding the tournament, but thankfully, the focus stays on the competition itself – which is exactly what we want.
1. Turning It Up To Eleven
Don’t Tone Down Ludicrous Video Games
For years, Hollywood often tried to change video games to fit what they thought moviegoers wanted, rather than faithfully adapting them for the games’ existing fans. The first trailer for the new Street Fighter movie suggests it’s continuing that trend.
Honestly, playing this feels just like the old arcade days – all that raw energy from the fights and those awesome, cheesy one-liners are still there. You can really see it in the character designs and even in the little details, like Ken kicking the doors off a car. It’s totally over-the-top, which is exactly what Street Fighter should be – something the last movie really lacked. If they keep this up and nail that classic beat-em-up vibe, this could seriously be one of the best video game movies we’ve gotten in a long time.
