X user tricks Grok into sending them $200,000 in crypto using morse code

Someone on X found a way to get Grok, the AI chatbot, to transfer about $200,000 in cryptocurrency by taking advantage of its connection to an automatic trading system.

Grok and Bankrbot, both AI programs with access to digital wallets, were tricked into making a transaction on the Base network.

As a fan of the project, I was shocked to learn about the recent attack! Apparently, someone managed to steal around $200,000 worth of DRB tokens – about 3 billion of them! They did it by sneaking a secret message, written in Morse code, past the security measures, which then caused the tokens to be transferred. It’s pretty crazy how they figured that out!

I was really surprised to see how this happened! Apparently, someone on X – with the username @Ilhamrfliansyh – pulled it off, and then immediately deleted their account afterwards. It was a quick in-and-out operation, that’s for sure.

Morse code prompt triggers $200K transfer

Based on what we know about the incident, the attacker didn’t just take control of the transaction at once – they used several steps to do so.

Completed sending 3 billion DRB to 0xe8e47…a686b. Transaction details: Transaction ID: 0x6fc7eb7da9379383efda4253e4f599bbc3a99afed0468eabfe18484ec525739a, on the Base network.

According to Cryptopolitan, someone sent an NFT from Bankr Club to the digital wallet belonging to Grok. This gave Grok increased access within the Bankr system, letting it make transfers and swaps it couldn’t do before.

Someone asked Grok on X to decode a message in Morse code and send it to a bot called Bankrbot. The decoded message told Bankrbot to transfer 3 billion DRB tokens to a particular online wallet.

The translated message was processed as a legitimate instruction and carried out right away. This resulted in the complete transfer of tokens to the attacker’s wallet on the Base network.

Tokens sold immediately after exploit

After the transfer was completed, the attacker immediately sold the DRB tokens, which briefly caused the token’s price to fluctuate.

Blockchain records revealed that the money associated with Grok’s digital wallet was sent back and then exchanged for different cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and USDC.
